Football: Dana Hills passing tournament launches busy summer

The Dana Hills seven on seven passing tournament on Saturday was the official start to what is going to be weekly competitions through the middle of July.

JSerra, led by quarterback Nick Robinson, defeated Upland in overtime in the championship game. Sam Philippi caught the winning touchdown pass. Ethan Aguayo was big on both sides of the ball for JSerra, along with Diego Williams.

The day featured lots of quality quarterbacks, from Blake Barnett of Corona Santiago to Travis Waller of Servite to Tyler Hilinski of Upland.

Off season training figures to become more important than ever with teams limited to no more than 18 hours a week of practice time starting when official practice begins in August.

Villa Park won the Whittier College tournament on Saturday, beating Buena Park in the final. Hart defeated Westlake to win the Pierce College tournament. Crescenta Valley defeated Bishop Amat in the final of the Claremont tournament.

Next week, there’s the Conejo Valley tournament. Later in the month, Saugus is hosting a one-day tournament. The Huntington Beach Edison tournament on July 12 will feature 20 teams, including St. John Bosco and Mater Dei.
