Excessive heat causing prep events to be canceled

Expected triple-digit temperatures on Wednesday are causing high school sporting events to be canceled and practices moved to later in the evening.
At Woodland Hills El Camino Real, golf and tennis competitions have been canceled, Athletic Director Richard Yi said. Football practice has been moved to 5 p.m.
At Lake Balboa Birmingham, Athletic Director Rick Prizant said coaches must check with him for an update when outdoor practice will be allowed. On Tuesday, teams in cross country, tennis and football were told to wait until after 4:30 p.m. A water polo match was played. Last year, a water polo match had to be canceled because of concern over spectators being too hot.
In Palm Springs, the football team had to cut short practice on Tuesday but not because of heat. Coach Dan Murphy said lightning caused the team to stop after an hour. The team intends to practice today at 4:30 pm.
