Boys’ basketball: With continuing transfers, Open Division is a savior
- Share via
With the decision of Trevor Stanback (Chaminade) and Tyler Dorsey (St. John Bosco) to leave their state championship teams and transfer to Maranatha, you can say the people who came up with the CIF Southern Section Open Division playoff idea for basketball last season are saviors.
It means every season, when the transfers are completed and teams suddenly become very good, they can be moved around depending on performance.
It’s the only way to deal with what has become a yearly summer exodus of players switching programs. If a team becomes one of the best in Southern California thanks to an influx of new players, it will join the 16-team Open Division and can fight for a championship with the other schools that have transfers.
Yes, it’s looking more and more like AAU basketball, but that’s where things are headed.
