Boys’ basketball: Three top regional finals at Colony High
The Southern California Regional finals in boys’ basketball are divided between The Pyramid in Long Beach and Colony High in Ontario on Saturday. It’s going to be a tough call for fans, because there are three top finals for Division III, IV and V at Colony.
Division III: Cathedral vs. Damien, 8 p.m. These two teams played in the Southern Section Open Division and are loaded with future college players. Damien’s Jeremy Hemsley is headed to San Diego State. Teammate Bryce Peters is a rising junior. Senior Malik Fitts is another standout. Cathedral has a trio of future Pac-12 players in Kobe Paras (UCLA commit), Lucas Siewert (Arizona State) and Milan Acquaah (Washington State). Damien will have to do well rebounding to stay with the Phantoms.
Division IV: Crespi vs. Campbell Hall, 4 p.m. Crespi has caught fire in the post season. It’s group of young players, led by junior De’Anthony Melton, that seemingly gets better every game. Campbell Hall, led by UCLA-bound Aaron Holiday and junior Jordan Cohen, comes out of the tough Gold Coast League. Advantage is with the Celts.
Division V: Sierra Canyon vs. Price, noon. These are two more former Open Division teams with top big men and top guards. Sierra Canyon was ranked among the top four teams in Southern California for most of the year. Price came close to beating Mater Dei in the Southern Section playoffs. It’s a big-time game at high noon. Sierra Canyon is the favorite.
