Boys’ basketball: Stanley Johnson Show comes to Encino [Video]

Stanley Johnson, the standout basketball player from Santa Ana Mater Dei, got the Kobe Bryant treatment on Wednesday when he played against Encino Crespi in a scrimmage at Crespi.
Crespi students were calling out, “Stanley.” In pregame warmups, they were asking Johnson to dunk the ball, and he tried to oblige.
When the real scrimmage began, the Arizona-bound Johnson didn’t disappoint. Playing point guard, he was making moves that will be seen on ESPN and elsewhere in the future.
Crespi sophomore Max Heidegger offered his own intriguing moves. When he’s under control, Heidegger is going to score a lot of points this season for the Celts.
Mater Dei junior guard La’vette Parker had a couple of nice baskets. Crespi 6-foot-2 sophomore De’Anthony Melton is on his way to becoming a very good player. No score was kept at the scrimmage.
Mater Dei is ranked No. 1 by The Times. Crespi is No. 14. Both had good moments. Mater Dei opens its season on Monday in the Mission Viejo tournament. Crespi opens on Saturday at Viewpoint.
