Boys’ basketball: CIF state championship matchups
The matchups for this weekend’s CIF state basketball championships on Friday and Saturday in Berkeley:
Friday
Division V: Sierra Canyon (25-4) vs. San Francisco University (28-7), noon: This would be a Hooisers-like ending if University were to pull off the upset. Sierra Canyon has been playing and beating some of the top teams in the state all year. Guard Deveral Ramsey and center Cody Riley lead the Trail Blazers. The pick: Sierra Canyon.
Division III: Damien (28-5) vs. Moraga Campolindo (28-4), 4 p.m.: This is all new territory for Damien, enjoying its best basketball season ever. The trio of Jeremy Hemsley, Bryce Peters and Malik Fitts knows how to deliver in big games. Having faced the likes of Cathedral, Chino Hills and Etiwanda has prepared Damien for this test. Chris Hansen, a 6-foot-7 center headed to UC San Diego, led Campolindo in the Northern Regional final with 22 points. The pick: Damien.
Division I: Chino Hills (17-14) vs. San Ramon Valley (26-6), 8 p.m.: Please raise your hand if you picked Chino Hills to eliminate Corona Centennial last week? Yes, the Huskies keep rolling along without a center, and they face another challenge against 6-foot-10 Greg Polosky. The good news is that the Huskies’ zone defense has been working, and the Ball brothers, Lonzo and LiAngelo, like playing in an arena setting. The pick: Chino Hills.
Saturday
Division IV: Crespi (28-7) vs. Capital Christian (27-8): Crespi has been making free throws, playing outstanding defense and relying on a young but talented group of underclassmen. They’ll have to deal with the full-court press and athleticism of Capital Christian. The pick: Crespi.
Division II: La Mirada (30-5) vs. San Jose Mitty (20-10), 4 p.m. It’s another chance for La Mirada’s under appreciated big men, 6-8 Kendall Lauderale and 6-7 Dezmon Murphy, to show off their talent. It’s a huge challenge, because Mitty has 6-9 junior Ben Krone. The pick: Mitty.
Open Division: Santa Ana Mater Dei (29-4) vs. Bishop O’Dowd (27-4), 8 p.m. It’s been awhile since Mater Dei was considered an underdog. The Monarchs are going for their fifth consecutive state title, but standing in the way is 6-10 Ivan Rabb. A year ago, Stanley Johnson and the Monarchs prevented Rabb from celebrating a state title. He’s healthy and will be tough to stop. The pick: Bishop O’Dowd.
The games will be lived streamed at TWCCommunity.com.
