Boys’ basketball: Damien, Mater Dei advance to championship game

It was physical, tough, loud and quite a semifinal game at the Classic at Damien on Thursday night. Host Damien held on for a 62-61 victory over Eastvale Roosevelt.

Cameron Shelton and Elijah McCullough each had 13 points and Justin Hemsley added 12. Damien improved to 15-0. Shelton, a member of Chino Hills’ 35-0 team last season, has a 50-game win streak going.

Colin Cuniff made four threes for Damien to help offset the play of Roosevelt’s Matt Mitchell and Jemarl Baker.

Damien will play Santa Ana Mater Dei in Friday’s 8:30 p.m. final at Damien. Mater Dei pulled out a 51-49 win over Corona Centennial. Spencer Freedman led the way with 14 points. The Monarchs were 12 of 12 from the free-throw line. Isom Butler had 14 points for Centennial.

Alemany defeated Oak Park, 71-67. DJ McDonald finished with 23 points and Brandon Davis added 16. Freshman Clark Slajchert led Oak Park with 24 points and Riley Battin had 22.

Long Beach Poly defeated St. John Bosco, 69-56. Zafir Williams had 32 points. Birmingham defeated Etiwanda, 78-70, behind 26 points from Devonaire Doutrive. Mark Boland added 19. Kessler Edwards led Etiwanda with 25. Santa Monica defeated Rancho Christian, 80-71.

In the Silver Division semifinals, Vista held off Los Altos, 77-69. Tarus Samuels had 27 points. Jarod Lucas led Los Altos with 27 points. Taft defeated Dominguez, 72-69. Antwan January finished with 20 points.

Windward defeated Rancho Cucamonga, 70-65. Jules Bernard contributed 33 points and 18 rebounds.

Crespi lost to Morea Catholic, 83-71. Sophomore Kyle Owens scored 23 points and Devon Rojo had 20.

Esperanza (13-1) won the Orange County tournament final with a 92-60 win over Temecula Valley. Tournament MVP Kezie Okpala scored 34 poitns. Brendan Harrick scored 26 points.

In Oregon, No. 1-ranked Sierra Canyon fought back Gonzaga, 85-81. Cody Riley finished with 32 points and Marvin Bagley III had 30.

In San Diego, Fairfax defeated San Diego Cathedral, 73-45. The guard duo of Ethan Anderson and Jamal Hartwell had 21 and 20 points, respectively. Bishop O’Dowd defeated Heritage Christian, 84-72. Juhwan Harris-Dyson had 27 points for Heritage.

Horizon Christian defeated Campbell Hall, 76-59. Jonny Garnet had 24 points and 16 rebounds.

In Rancho Mirage, Chino Hills won its 50th consecutive game with a 106-93 win over Utah Pleasant Grove. LaMelo Ball scored 36 points, LiAngelo Ball had 35 points and Eli Scott 23. Chino Hills will play Sheldon in Friday’s championship game. Sheldon defeated Crossroads, 51-40.

Simi Valley defeated Washington Mount Si, 58-53. Jacob Grebeta scored 17 points and Justin Campbell 13. Harvard-Westlake defeated Capital Christian, 80-71. Cassius Stanley scored 19 points, Johnny Juzang 18 and Ray Mueller 17.

In the DIBound tournament, the championship game will match Bishop Montgomery against Long Beach Millikan. Bishop Montgomery defeated Washington, 88-49. Ethan Thompson scored 26 points and David Singleton had 23. Millikan knocked off Narbonne, 69-66.

Sherman Oaks Notre Dame defeated Palisades, 44-32. Freshman Ziaire Williams had 14 points for the Knights. Calabasas defeated Van Nuys, 62-51. Max Cheylov led the Coyotes with 18 points. Crescenta Valley defeated Sylmar, 69-51, despite 22 points from Dayquan Williams. Venice defeated St. Monica, 62-47. Verdugo Hills defeated Keppel, 70-56.

Pasadena received 25 points from Bryce Hamilton in a 57-51 win over El Camino Real.

Chaminade defeated Inglewood, 67-66. KJ Martin scored 20 points and Jack Gallant 13. Former Calabasas Coach Jon Palarz will get to face his old school again on Friday at 2:30 p.m. at Dorsey for the consolation championship of the D1Bound tournament.

Servite defeated St. Paul, 47-45.

In the Bay Area, Loyola was beaten by James Logan, 53-52.

St. Francis defeated La Serna, 85-70, in the championship game of the Nogales tournament. Joey Walsh had 31 points. Malakhi Jensen added 16 points.

In the Village Christian tournament, Camarillo rallied to defeat Burbank, 60-56, to advance to the championship game. Jonah Cottrell scored 28 points and Jaime Jaquez 23. Village Christian defeated Muir, 82-74.

Oxnard (13-3) won the Ventura tournament championship with a 64-35 win over West Ranch. Mason Johnson and Brycen Wight were named co-MVPs of the tournament.

At the San Gabriel Valley tournament, Oaks Christian defeated Central City, 53-33.

In the Orange County tournament, La Mirada took third place with a 69-64 win over Crean Lutheran.

In Santa Barbara, Saugus defeated Westlake in overtime, 74-71, to reach the championship game. Bing Huang led Westlake with 22 points. Flintridge Prep lost to Santa Fe, 58-23.

JW North won the Covina tournament championship with a 49-38 win over Cajon. Walnut finished third with a 65-61 win over Fremont.

In Hawaii, Santa Margarita was beaten by Punahou, 80-66.
