Boys’ basketball: Long Beach Poly advances to Redondo tournament final

Long Beach Poly advanced to the championship game of the Redondo tournament on Friday night with a 60-55 semifinal victory over Westchester.

Junior guard Drew Buggs scored 19 points for the Jackrabbits (3-0), who will face Redondo in the 3:30 p.m. final (moved because of a state volleyball match later in the evening). Redondo defeated St. John Bosco, 58-56. Billy Preston, who used to play for St. John Bosco, led Redondo with 23 points.

In consolation games, Lawndale defeated Mayfair, 72-54. Brodricks Jones scored 20 points. Kendall Small led Mayfair with 17. Conner Longmire scored 28 points and Justin Bessard had 19 in Calabasas’ 61-54 win over Inglewood. Hart defeated Narbonne, 67-33. Gardena Serra defeated Compton, 61-52. Caleb Wilson had 17 points for the Cavaliers. Raysean Scott scored 18 points for Compton.

Santa Monica defeated Campbell Hall, 61-55, and will play on Saturday for the consolation championship. Gabriel Salazar had 18 points and Jordan Cohen 14 for Campbell Hall. Jonah Matthews had 19 points and freshman Spencer Freedman had 14 points for Santa Monica. Taft received 27 points from Darius Henderson in a 66-49 win over Peninsula.

Saturday’s schedule: Redondo or St. John Bosco vs. Long Beach Poly, 3:30 p.m., championship; Redondo or St. John Bosco vs. Westchester, 2 p.m., third place; Serra vs. Calabasas, 1:30 p.m., fifth place.

In the Alhambra tournament, University won the championship with a 57-45 win over Yeshiva. Tournament MVP Cushan Allen scored 20 points. Dwight Murray added 12 points and was all-tournament. Birmingham defeated Franklin, 58-51. Emry Marquez had 40 points.
