Baseball: What a day for former Mater Dei players Ty Moore, Jeremy Martinez
You could always count on Ty Moore and Jeremy Martinez to perform at their best in the post season during their days at Santa Ana Mater Dei, and both did their best on Sunday trying to help their respective teams, UCLA and USC, stay alive in the NCAA tournament.
Moore hit a three-run home run in UCLA’s win over Cal State Bakersfield and had three hits and a scored a key run off a stolen base in another win over Maryland to keep the Bruins alive and advance to a regional championship game against Maryland on Monday at 8 p.m. at Jackie Robinson Stadium.
Martinez had four hits and eight RBIs in USC’s two games on Sunday, but the Trojans couldn’t hold off Virginia, losing, 14-10, in 11 innings.
Together, Moore and Martinez combined for eight hits and 11 RBis on Sunday.
Meanwhile, former Newport Harbor freshman pitcher Connor Seabold threw six shutout innings to lead Cal State Fullerton past Pepperdine, 10-1, and advance to a Super Regional game against Louisville.
