Baseball: Harvard-Westlake unleashes its bats in win over Loyola
After playing into the 11th inning on Monday in a 3-3 tie, Harvard-Westlake and Loyola had a much different Mission League game on Thursday at Loyola. It was all Harvard-Westlake, which defeated the Cubs, 9-1.
Jack Flaherty hit a three-run home run to help the Wolverines improve to 13-4-1 and 4-1-1 in league. Loyola (14-2-1, 6-1-1) lost an opportunity to put some distance on Harvard-Westlake. Now, if the two teams end up tied, Harvard-Westlake has the tiebreaker edge.
Michael Vokulich threw four innings and Logan Simon closed. Ezra Steinberg and Matt Karo each had two hits.
In the consolation championship of the National Classic, Alemany defeated Riverside North, 8-1. Kyle Merkel threw a complete game, allowing two hits. Alex Mckenna had two triples and three RBIs. Cristian Montes added two hits and three RBIs. Santa Margarita and Gahr finished in a 3-3 tie when the game was called by darkness.
In the Southwestern League, Murrieta Valley (13-6, 5-2) is thrusting itself into title contention after completing a sweep this week of Great Oak with a 5-4 victory. Kevin Padio went three for three with two RBIs.
Vista Murrieta pulled off a sweep of Temecula Valley with a 2-0 victory. Jack Moberg struck out five in four innings and Hunter Tidwell had two hits.
In the Marmonte League, Agoura stayed unbeaten with a 6-0 win over Royal. Matt Lautz struck out 11, walked two and allowed four hits. Brandon Shearer had two hits. Simi Valley defeated Calabasas, 2-1. Nick Gambino allowed one run in 5 1/3 innings.
In the Suburban League, Eric Tapper threw the shutout in La Mirada’s 5-0 win over Norwalk Glenn. It was Glenn’s first league loss.
In the Pioneer League, El Segundo defeated Compton Centennial, w-0. Willem Mostert struck out nine and allowed two hits.
In the Baseline League, Upland pulled out a 10-9 win over Glendora, rallying from a 9-3 deficit. Justin Black hit a three-run home run. Jeff Kross had three hits. Justin Cage had four RBIs for Glendora. Eric Flores hit a grand slam.
In the South Coast League, Stephen Young threw a one-hitter in Mission Viejo’s 5-0 victory over Tesoro.
In the Channel League, Charlie Brooks struck out nine in Buena’s 2-1 win over San Marcos.
In the Moore League, Long Beach Wilson defeated Long Beach Jordan, 5-1, in eight innings. Tyler Radcliffe had 12 strikeouts in seven innings.
In San Diego, El Camino Real defeated St. Augustine, 7-2. Brian Gallagher threw a complete game. Eric Yang had three hits and four RBIs.
Warren (13-2) lost in its divisional championship game of the Lions tournament to Mt. Carmel, 1-0. Bryan Duenas struck out eight in five innings. The winning run came home in the bottom of the seventh on an error.
Santa Ana Foothill won its divisional championship with a 7-0 win over Santana. Dylan Doherty was named tournament MVP.
Campbell Hall defeated Viewpoint, 4-2. Ethan Miller threw a complete game. Sloan Fischer had two hits.
Sierra Canyon (14-4) defeated New Community Jewish, 12-1. Seth Stone struck out nine. Brock Bell had three hits.
Birmingham defeated Las Vegas Foothill, 1-0. Jonathan Russomano threw six shutout innings. Victor Mercado had a walk-off RBI single.
