Baseball: El Camino Real vs. Cleveland for City title
Two schools with great traditions at Dodger Stadium, El Camino Real and Cleveland, will meet on Saturday for the City Section Division I championship at 1 p.m. at Chavez Ravine. Lincoln will play Chavez for the Division II title at 10 a.m.
El Camino Real has won seven City championships. The Conquistadores have produced such players as Randy Wolf and Connor Jackson.
Cleveland has won four titles. Its most memorable win came in 1982, when Bret Saberhagen threw the only no-hitter in championship game history.
El Camino Real owns two wins over Cleveland this season in West Valley League play, 9-2 and 7-3. Its No. 2 pitcher, Jordan Berg, is ready to throw, with Matt Malconian available in relief. The Conquistadores’ Eric Yang, a junior catcher, was the top hitter in the West Valley League and hit a home run in the semifinals.
Cleveland is expected to keep using its two-man rotation of Sam Villa and Ben Kaser. The Cavaliers have been playing well defensively.
The key to the game will be the pitchers being able to throw strikes and keep runners off the bases.
The game will be televised live by Time Warner Cable’s SportsNet.
