Baseball: Chaminade excels in Mission League opener behind Blake Rutherford
Eagles win Mission League opener over St. Francis
Pitchers are going to have to figure out how to get out junior outfielder Blake Rutherford of Chaminade. He hits fastballs, he hits curveballs, he hits anything.
He had three hits Monday night, including a three-run home run sent over the right-field fence at Brookside Park, to help Chaminade take an 8-2 lead over St. Francis in the bottom of the seventh in a Mission League opener.
The game ended with one out in the bottom of the seventh when the lights went off. It remains to be seen whether the game will be resumed Friday at Chaminade or awarded to the Eagles as a victory.
Nick Kahle added three hits and Reece Weinberg pitched well in relief for Chaminade. Jonathan Tyler of St. Francis limited the Eagles to one run after five innings, striking out five. But the Eagles got four runs in the sixth.
