Baseball: First-year coaches get opening wins in the Trinity League

At least for one day, first-year coaches Shawn Gilbert of Servite and Don Barbara of St. John Bosco have left their fans feeling thrilled after opening wins in the Trinity League on Monday.
Servite scored a run in the bottom of the seventh to defeat Orange Lutheran, 2-1. Nigel Ward of Servite threw 2 2/3 innings of shutout relief.
St. John Bosco defeated Santa Margarita, 3-1. Starter Henry Martinez turned in a strong performance and Nick Morales got the save. The Braves scored two runs in the sixth to break a 1-1 tie.
Preseason favorite JSerra opened with a 3-0 win over Mater Dei. Quentin Longmire struck out 10 in 5 2/3 innings. Royce Lewis and Chase Strumpf each had RBIs. Michael Thomas gave up five hits in defeat. Brandon Perez had two hits for Mater Dei.
It’s the beginning of a long five-week period in which all six Trinity League teams will be play 15 games and five three-game series.
In the Inland Valley League, North defeated Riverside Poly, 6-3. Shane Martinez had a double and two RBI.
