Friday’s top high school football playoff matchups:

West Hills Chaminade (7-3) vs. Long Beach Poly (7-3) at Veterans Memorial Stadium, 7 p.m.: If Chaminade with its collection of talented young playersis really going to be one of the top teams in 2017, this Southern Section Division I opener is the first step toward proving it. The Eagles have had a season to gain experience. They’ll need a strong rushing performance from junior T.J. Pledger. Poly has had trouble beating top teams. The Jackrabbits need consistency and fewer penalties to pull this one out. The pick: Chaminade.

Newhall Hart (8-2) at Los Angeles Cathedral (10-0), 7 p.m.: Get ready for lots of scoring in this Southern Section Division 3 playoff opener. Hart’s defense is facing a tough test against Cathedral’s quarterback duo of Andrew Tovar and freshman Bryce Young. Hart will try to control the clock with quarterback Nick Moore. The pick: Cathedral.
