Roundup: Thatcher Hurd brings the heat with 10 strikeouts for Mira Costa

Thatcher Hurd of Mira Costa is in uncharted territory. A former catcher, he stood on the mound Wednesday and couldn’t have missed all the radar guns pointed in his direction with more than a dozen pro scouts watching in Manhattan Beach. With a fastball in the 90s mph and a letter of intent already signed with UCLA, Hurd has lots of options.

West Torrance was no match for Hurd. He struck out 10 in five shutout innings in his team’s 12-8 victory.

The Mustangs rode the hot inning of catcher Nick Bacura, who hit a two-run home run in the first inning, his third of the season. He just missed another home run with a double off the left-field fence and added another double to finish three for three.

Clearly, Hurd has found a future on the mound. Now it’s up to him to decide whether college or pro ball is the best path moving forward to overcome his inexperience on the mound, and perfect pitches and fundamentals needed to be successful long term.

Villa Park 7, Dana Hills 2: The Spartans won the championship game of the Ryan Lemmon tournament. Isaac Ontiveros struck out seven in 4 1/3 innings of relief.

Etiwanda 10, La Quinta 2: Austin Roellig, Geno Mejia, Carlos Ramirez and Yahir Ramirez each had two hits for the Eagles.

Norco 5, Vista Murrieta 2: Menelik Israel had two RBIs and Chris Hernandez struck out seven in 4 2/3 innings for Norco.

Trabuco Hills 4, Arlington 3: Tyler Collins got the walk-off hit in the bottom of the eighth. He and Nick Perez finished with two hits.

Fountain Valley 9, Westminster 4: Blake Wentz struck out six in four innings.

Marina 9, Ocean View 5: Gavin Langer went four for four with four RBIs and Jackson Roeder added three hits to lead Marina.

Edison 9, Huntington Beach 7: Evan Knipe hit a home run and Luke Serven finished with two hits and three RBIs for Edison.

Beckman 8, Irvine 3: Paul Murrow had two hits and three RBIs.

Laguna Beach 3, La Mirada 2: Ryan Strickland struck out seven in five innings.

Crespi 3, El Camino Real 2: Isaiah Magdaleno led Crespi with two hits and two RBIs.

Mission Viejo 9, Anaheim Canyon 5: Mike Pollard went four for four.

Corona Santiago 7, Crean Lutheran 6: Santiago scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh. Austin Kiernan had two hits and two RBIs.

Sierra Canyon 8, Crescenta Valley 4: Jackson Slipock and Shane McClendon each had two hits.

Quartz Hill 8, Lancaster 0: Logan Reddeman and Justin Freiberg combined on the shutout.

Mater Dei 7, Loyola 2: The Monarchs improved to 6-1. Drew Porter had three hits, including a three-run home run, and Ethan Hedges and Skye Selinsky added two apiece. Loyola was limited to one hit.

Servite 3, Birmingham 2: Ben Miltko finished with 10 strikeouts in 5 1/3 innings.

El Camino Real 6, Agoura 0: Jillian Kelly struck out eight and allowed two hits. Abigail Miller hit a home run.

Boys basketball

St. John Bosco 81, Loyola 47: Jeremiah Nyardko led the Braves (2-0) with 17 points.

Damien 68, Sherman Oaks Notre Dame 58: Damien stayed unbeaten going into a Thursday showdown with Harvard-Westlake as Malik Thomas had 33 points. Ben Shtolzberg scored 21 points for Notre Dame.

Crespi 69, Simi Valley 60: Mason Dorsey led the Celts with 16 points.

Calabasas 68, St. Francis 59: Buckley DeJardin scored 22 points and Jake Goldberg 19 for St. Francis.

Buena 58, Newbury Park 54: Austin Schliecher had 16 points and 10 rebounds for 4-1 Buena.

JSerra 81, Costa Mesa 43: Max Bowman scored 20 points.

Girls’ basketball

Sierra Canyon 52, Sage Hill 49: Freshman Kayla Malek made a three as time expired. MacKenly Randolph had 17 points and 16 rebounds.

Troy 59, Aliso Niguel 49: Isabella Pearson finished with 18 points and Aliyah Gonzalez scored 16 points for Troy.

Football

St. Bernard 58, Birmingham 28: The first pass by former Birmingham quarterback Jackson Dadich went for a touchdown in the second quarter. Terrell Cooks scored on a 75-yard run and had a 76-yard kickoff return. It was the first victory at St. Bernard for former Narbonne coach Manuel Douglas.
