Santa Ana Mater Dei and Orange Lutheran played for a fourth time on Saturday night in softball this season, but it was the biggest game of all — for the Southern Section Division 1 championship.
Mater Dei, behind pitcher Gabby Sandoval, defeated Orange Lutheran, 8-2, at Bill Barber Park in Irvine. The Monarchs had come in having lost two of the three Trinity League games to Orange Lutheran.
In Division 4, Alyssa Loza threw a shutout in North Torrance’s 5-0 win over Torrance. Loza used to pitch for Torrance. Shonnie Baker hit a three-run home run.
In Division 5, Olivia Gutierrez threw a four-hitter in Lompoc’s 3-0 victory over Woodland Hills Louisville. Emma Detamore struck out nine for Louisville.
Rylee Sager had a home run for unseeded Lompoc, which defeated the No. 1, No. 2 and No. 4 seeds en route to its first championship.
In Division 6, Lancaster Paraclete won its second consecutive title for Coach Margaret Neill with an 8-4 win over Anaheim Savanna.
Taylor Roberts hit a three-run home run in the top of the seventh and got the save on the mound for Paraclete.
