Great week for Dodgers’ Jackie Robinson, Ebbets Field (links)
It’s a big week for the Dodgers’ roots, today marking the day the Dodgers called up Jackie Robinson, Friday the official release of his film biography “42,†on Tuesday marking 66 years since he made his historic major league debut and this week marking the 100th anniversary of Ebbets Field.
Here’s a look at it all, plus some other tidbits, on the web:
-- Your first stop should be Ron Rapoport’s story at LA Observed on his interviewing Robinson in a dark downtown hotel room, near his death. Insightful and wonderfully written, Rapoport, then working for The Times, spoke to Robinson before the Dodgers retired his uniform number and four months before he died.
-- MLB.com’s Evan Drellich takes a long look at Ebbets Field and its place in Brooklyn history, a piece that includes comments from Vin Scully.
-- The National Baseball Hall of Fame remembers Robinson.
-- Robinson had his differences with Walter O’Malley, but it’s the grandsons of the man who moved the Dodgers to Los Angeles who now run the San Diego Padres. They’re featured by Tom Krasovic in the San Diego Union-Tribune.
-- Robinson teammate Carl Erskine does a terrific Q&A; with The Times’ Pat Morrison.
-- Meanwhile, over to this year’s edition of the Dodgers, Grantland’s Rany Jazayerli thinks for such an extraordinary payroll, the Dodgers sure look ordinary.
-- Worth the laughs: Here is the video of Clayton Kershaw and Matt Kemp joining Hyun-Jin Ryu to perform “Gangnam Style†at the Dodgers spring talent contest. It’s true.
-- From The Times’ Dylan Hernandez, Matt Kemp admits he’s become frustrated at his slow start.
-- CBS Sports Jon Heyman has heard the Dodgers are already over the $200-million mark in contract talks with Kershaw.
-- Luis Cruz, back in the lineup Wednesday after sitting down the past two games, tells Dodgers.com’s Ken Gurnick that he reached out to his father for advice on snapping his hitless start.
