Four-run eighth inning keys Dodgers’ 7-1 win over Padres

KEY MOMENT: The Dodgers blew open the game with a four-run eighth inning. Juan Uribe drove in the first run of the inning with a single to right field. Matt Kemp scored on a wild pitch by the Padres’ third pitcher of the inning, Jesse Hahn. Darwin Barney extended the Dodgers’ lead to 6-1 with a single to right field.

ON THE MOUND: Hyun-Jin Ryu was spectacular in his return from the 15-day disabled list, limiting the Padres to one run and four hits over seven innings. After he gave up a run in the first inning on a double by Yasmani Grandal, Ryu faced one batter more than the minimum. Pedro Baez pitched two innings and lowered his earned-run average to 1.84.

AT THE PLATE: Kemp was two for four with a walk and a double. Kemp ended a 1-1 stalemate in the fifth inning when he drove in Hanley Ramirez with the go-ahead run on a single to center field. The Dodgers’ first run was created by Scott Van Slyke, who singled in Yasiel Puig with two outs in the first inning. Adrian Gonzalez collected four hits. Uribe, who returned from the disabled list, was two for five with a double and two runs batted in.

THE LINEUP CARD: With the Dodgers facing a left-hander in Padres starter Eric Stults, Manager Don Mattingly started the game with the left-handed-hitting Dee Gordon and Carl Crawford on the bench. Barney started at second base in place of Gordon and Van Slyke started in left field in place of Crawford. With Gordon out of the lineup, Puig batted leadoff. Puig doubled in the first at-bat of the game, as second baseman Jedd Gyorko and right fielder Rymer Liriano lost his pop up in the sun.

ROSTER MOVES: To clear roster spots forRyu and Uribe, the Dodgers optioned right-hander Carlos Frias and infielder Miguel Rojas to triple-A Albuquerque. Rosters expand Monday, and Frias and Rojas will be eligible to return to the major leagues Tuesday, after Albuquerque’s season ends.
