Don Mattingly not around to see bullpen blow lead in 5-4 loss

KEY MOMENT: The Dodgers blew a 4-2 advantage in a nightmarish seventh inning, which started with starting pitcher Carlos Frias giving up a leadoff single to Adeiny Hechavarria. Frias was replaced by left-hander Adam Liberatore, who gave up consecutive hits. With the bases loaded, right-hander Chris Hatcher was called out of the bullpen. Hatcher gave up a run-scoring single to Martin Prado, after which he served up a two-run single to Giancarlo Stanton. Suddenly, the Dodgers were down, 5-4. The two runs charged to Liberatore were the first of his major league career.

DISCIPLINARY REPORT: Manager Don Mattingly drew his second ejection in 10 days, this time for disputing a replay ruling. The play occurred in the fourth inning, when Howie Kendrick lined a ball to right field that was caught by a sliding Stanton, according to first base umpire Jerry Layne. Believing Stanton trapped the ball, Mattingly asked for the play to be reviewed. “When they showed it on the big screen, you see it bounce,” Mattingly said. When Layne’s call was upheld because there was insufficient evidence to overturn it, Mattingly threw a small tantrum, removing his cap and throwing it down in the dugout. “It’s just frustrating,” said Mattingly, who thinks calls on reviewed plays should be made in the league office without any consideration to the initial on-field ruling. “It cost us a run in a one-run game,” Mattingly said.

AT THE PLATE: Utilityman Enrique Hernandez hit a home run against his former team, as he started at shortstop in place of Jimmy Rollins, whom Mattingly wanted to rest. Hernandez’s two-run home run in the fifth inning was his first for the Dodgers. Later in the inning, rookie center fielder Joc Pederson hit his team-leading 10th home run.

ON THE MOUND: Frias pitched a season-high six innings and gave up three runs and six hits. The Dodgers had trouble containing their former second baseman, Dee Gordon, who was four for five with a double and two runs. Gordon was hitless in eight at-bats in the first two games of the series.

EXTRA BASES: Yasiel Puig will be sidelined for at least a couple of more weeks because of a strained left hamstring, Mattingly said. “He’s going to be a while,” Mattingly said. … Adrian Gonzalez was 0 for four, ending his hitting streak at 11 games.
