Arizona Diamondbacks rally to beat Dodgers, 10-6

KEY MOMENT: The Dodgers had blown chances early and twice yielded the lead by the eighth inning, when Welington Castillo doubled to center off Pedro Baez to score Jake Lamb and give Arizona a decisive 7-6 lead.

ON THE MOUND: Mike Bolsinger’s exit, after he suffered flu-like symptoms, meant the bullpen had to take over early. This did not work out well for the Dodgers. In the fifth and sixth innings, Joel Peralta and Yimi Garcia served up two-run home runs, to Nick Ahmed and Yasmany Tomas, respectively, Tomas’ homer tying the score. In the seventh, Adam Liberatore allowed a two-run single, again tying the score. Finally, in the eighth, Baez gave up four runs.

AT THE PLATE: The Dodgers offense came alive mid-game but gave Diamondbacks starter Allen Webster a pass early. He threw just one strike to the first three batters, but with the bases loaded, Adrian Gonzalez grounded into a double play, which scored a run but quashed the rally. In the fourth, Andre Ethier and Yasmani Grandal led off with back-to-back home runs. Three batters later, Joc Pederson crushed a 458-foot homer to right-center. With the score tied 4-4 in the seventh, Jimmy Rollins hit a two-run single. But the Dodgers could not come back again in the ninth.

RECORD BOOKS: Ethier’s home run puts him in ninth place on the Los Angeles Dodgers all-time list with 155, passing Willie Davis. Pederson’s homer was his 20th this season. Only two National League rookies have hit more homers before July 1: Wally Berger, with 22 in 1930, and Albert Pujols, with 21 in 2011.

EXTRA BASES: Outfielder Carl Crawford, sidelined two months because of a torn side muscle, will begin a minor league rehabilitation assignment Tuesday at Class-A Rancho Cucamonga. He’ll begin as a designated hitter and the plan is for him to play in the outfield on Thursday. But the rehab stint will not be brief. “He’s going to need some time,” Dodgers Manager Don Mattingly said.
