Zach Lee, Joe Wieland among Dodgers’ latest five cuts

Scratch five more from the Dodgers’ big league roster.

The Dodgers announced their second round of cuts before Monday’s game, optioning pitchers Zach Lee, Carlos Frias, Chris Reed, Mike Bolinger and Joe Wieland to their minor league camp.

That could end up being the starting rotation for the Dodgers’ new triple-A team in Oklahoma City.

All five are young starters, who, depending on their success in the minors, are in some kind of line to be called up should -- when? -- someone in the rotation goes down to injury this season. Exactly how the line forms, probably not even the Dodgers know.

But innings become increasingly difficult to find for pitchers as starters are stretched out, so it serves the Dodgers best to have the extra starters in minor league games, where they can increase their workload.

Aside from Frias, all pitched fairly well this spring. Wieland did not allow a run in the six innings of his four appearances.

The Dodgers now have 53 players in their big league camp. More cuts, from position players, could follow Monday afternoon’s game against the A’s.
