After review, and review, Indians turn triple play on Dodgers

Ever seen a triple play? Yeah, but never like this one. Such a triple play was never even possible until this season.

The Cleveland Indians turned a triple play on the Dodgers in the bottom of the fourth inning Tuesday night at Dodger Stadium -- after two video reviews.

The Dodgers had Dee Gordon at third and Yasiel Puig at first with no outs when Adrian Gonzalez sent a fly to medium left. Mike Brantley made the catch and Gordon, fearless in most situations, tagged and sprinted home.

Catcher Yan Gomes took the perfect throw on one hop and tagged out Gordon. Puig then made a delayed advance to second on the throw, and Gomes fired to the base. Umpire Paul Nauert ruled the head-first sliding Puig safe.

But Indians Manager Terry Francona challenged the call at second, and it was overruled to give Cleveland a triple play. At least for the moment.

Only during the timeout while the play at second was being reviewed, the Dodgers also saw a replay of the play at the plate. One angle seemed to show Gordon slid under the tag.

So Dodgers Manager Don Mattingly came out and the Indians stayed on the field for a second review. This one, too, went in their favor, and the Gordon call was confirmed. And finally, oddly, the Indians had their first triple play since April 3, 2011.

It was the first triple play at Dodger Stadium since April 15, 2012, when the Dodgers turned one against the San Diego Padres and the first at Chavez Ravine against the Dodgers since the Milwaukee Brewers pulled one off Aug. 15, 2011.
