Dodgers offer no timetable for Hyun-Jin Ryu’s return

Reporting from Phoenix —  A statement issued by the Dodgers on Tuesday offered no timetable for Hyun-Jin Ryu’s return, as the team said the course for Ryu’s recovery will be determined after another a reevaluation in two weeks.

Ryu experienced discomfort in his left shoulder when playing catch Sunday, prompting him to return to Los Angeles the following day for an MRI. Compared with when he underwent a similar examination in 2012, there were no significant changes in his shoulder, according to the team.

Ryu was prescribed two weeks of rest and rehabilitation, after which he will be reexamined to determine “his throwing progression,” the Dodgers said.

Ryu missed six weeks last season because of inflammation in the same shoulder -- three weeks in April and three in September.

Provided the other four members of the rotation remain healthy, the Dodgers are expecting to have to find another starting pitcher for only two games next month -- one game on April 13 or 14 against the Seattle Mariners and another game on April 23 or 24 against the San Francisco Giants.

Manager Don Mattingly said the Dodgers are thinking of starting a reliever for the game against the Mariners rather than call up a starter from the minor leagues.

If Ryu’s absence extends beyond a month, Joe Wieland figures to be a top in-house candidate to replace him.
