Brandon McCarthy had no decision in Monday’s 6-5 win over the Seattle Mariners, but he had quite a night.
The Dodgers’ right-hander became the first pitcher in major league history to give up four home runs in a game in which he walked none and struck out at least 10.
He ended the evening as the major league leader in home runs allowed -- and in strikeouts. In 12 innings this season, he has given up six home runs and struck out 19.
McCarthy laughed at the question of how long he could stay atop the leaderboard in strikeouts.
“Until [David] Price gets on his run,” McCarthy said. “Price does that four times in a row, where he strikes out 10 or 12. It’s not the goal.”
Price, the Detroit Tigers’ ace, led the majors in strikeouts last season.
McCarthy has given up nine runs this season, eight on home runs. He plans to spend the days before his next start looking at video and working with coaches to try to figure out why his sinker is getting hit in the air, not on the ground.
“That’s concerning,” he said. “We’ll look at it.”
