Plans to stage the next Southland boxing card are moving away from a possible Oct. 15 date at Staples Center, as a crowded fall fight and sports schedule makes for a complicated fit.

Richard Schaefer, the former chief executive of Golden Boy Promotions who split from Oscar De La Hoya to form Ringstar Sports, originally sought a stacked tripleheader at Staples Center.

But fighter negotiations and concerns over competing on television against college football and postseason baseball led to delays.

“I’ve always said you not only need the right fight in the right venue, you need time to promote, and we ran out of time,†Schaefer told The Times on Monday.

“Oct. 15 is out. We’re looking for dates onward.â€

Schaefer was aiming for a card that might have included title fights including welterweight champion Danny Garcia, lightweight challenger Mikey Garcia and featherweight challenger Abner Mares.

Those fighters remain without dates, as Schaefer said he has reached out first to Staples Center to see which dates are open later in the fall.

November is jammed: Manny Pacquiao fights for Jessie Vargas’ welterweight belt Nov. 5 in Las Vegas, the UFC’s anticipated New York debut is on pay-per-view Nov. 12, Sergey Kovalev fights Andre Ward for the light-heavyweight boxing title Nov. 19 and unbeaten middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin is exploring a Nov. 26 date.

There’s a possible Canelo Alvarez date on HBO on Dec. 10.

But Staples Center is occupied by a college basketball doubleheader Dec. 3, and Dec. 17 features a Disney on Ice event.

That could lead the Schaefer-promoted Premier Boxing Champions card on Showtime to another venue. The Forum, for instance, is open Dec. 3 and Honda Center is clear Dec. 17.

“First, I have to get the date and the venue,†Schaefer said. “Then I’ll talk to Showtime. There’s plenty of fights — and fighters.â€
