Angels complete doubleheader sweep of White Sox with 7-5 win
KEY MOMENT: The Angels had a 6-5 lead in the sixth inning when left-hander Rich Hill walked Adam Eaton with a wild pitch that put runners on first base and third base with two outs, but right-hander Mike Morin struck out left-handed-hitting Leury Garcia looking at a 93-mph fastball to snuff out the threat.
AT THE PLATE: The Angels scored three runs in the second inning on singles by Josh Hamilton, Erick Aybar, Howie Kendrick and C.J. Cron, and Grant Green’s grounder. Kole Calhoun hit a two-run home run in the fifth, Hank Conger hit a run-scoring single in the sixth, and Kendrick drew a bases-loaded walk in the seventh. The Angels are hitting .388 (26 for 67) with runners in scoring position in the last seven games.
ON THE MOUND: Jered Weaver (9-6) won despite giving up five runs and nine hits, including two home runs, in 5 2/3 innings. He has given up 16 home runs, third most in the American League. Kevin Jepsen struck out two in a one-two-three seventh, Jason Grilli threw a scoreless eighth and Joe Smith had a clean ninth to become the first Angels pitcher with saves in both games of a doubleheader since Troy Percival against Kansas City on Sept. 6, 2003. Smith threw only 13 pitches in the two games.
IN THE FIELD: Aybar made a nice leaping catch of Dayan Viciedo’s line drive in the eighth. Alejandro De Aza followed with a wicked liner that nicked off the glove of Grilli and appeared headed for center field. But Aybar ranged behind the bag for the ball and flipped to Kendrick to start an inning-ending double play.
UP NEXT: Left-hander Tyler Skaggs (4-4, 4.34 ERA) will oppose Chicago left-hander John Danks (7-6, 4.26) at U.S. Cellular Field on Wednesday at 5 p.m. PDT. On the air: TV: FS West. Radio: 830.
