Angels first baseman C.J. Cron will undergo surgery Tuesday to repair a broken bone in his left hand.
He suffered the injury when he was hit by a fastball Friday in Baltimore. He was placed on the disabled list that night, but stayed with the team until Sunday.
The Angels announced they expect him to miss between six and eight weeks, which would put him on track to return around the start of September.
Cron, 26, had surged in recent weeks to raise his 2016 on-base-plus-slugging percentage to .808. He had mostly played first base while Albert Pujols nursed various lower-body ailments.
In Cron’s absence, the Angels called up Ji-Man Choi from triple-A Salt Lake. They will have him split time with Jefry Marte. Neither man has had any past success in the major leagues.
