Angels beat Houston Astros, 2-1, in 13 innings

AT THE PLATE: The Angels scored their first run in the fourth inning after loading the bases on an Albert Pujols walk, a Matt Joyce single and an Efren Navarro walk. Chris Iannetta flied to medium left field, just deep enough for Pujols to tag and score. The Astros tied the score, 1-1, in the fifth when Jose Altuve singled with one out, stole second base and scored when Carlos Correa smoked a double over the head of Joyce in left field. Erick Aybar had three hits. The Angels won despite going one for nine with runners in scoring position and getting one hit in 14 at-bats from Kole Calhoun, Mike Trout and Pujols.

ON THE MOUND: Left-hander Andrew Heaney, acquired from the Dodgers via Miami for Howie Kendrick last off-season, relied primarily on a 92-mph fastball and sharp slider to stifle an Astros team that racked up 13 runs and 16 hits Tuesday night. He threw first-pitch strikes to 14 of 23 batters, struck out five and walked one, and escaped a first-and-third, two-out jam in the fifth. “He has real stuff,” Manager Mike Scioscia said. “He has a nice, side-arm fastball, good velocity, he changes speeds well and gets the ball in on right-handers. Hopefully it’s the start of something big for us.” Astros right-hander Lance McCullers, making his eighth big league start after being recalled from double A in May, gave up one run and four hits in six innings.

ON THE BASES: Houston pinch-runner George Springer was picked off first base by reliever Joe Smith in the ninth. Evan Gattis then shot a grounder into the left-field corner but slid awkwardly into second, his front leg popping up before he reached the bag. That gave Johnny Giavotella extra time to field David Robertson’s strong one-hop throw from left field and tag out Gattis. Pinch-runner Marwin Gonzalez slid past second on a 10th-inning stolen-base attempt and was tagged out by shortstop Aybar.

UPON FURTHER REVIEW: All three instant-replay reviews — one Astros challenge on Springer’s pickoff and two initiated by the umpires, on slides by Gattis in the ninth and Gonzalez in the 10th — went the Angels’ way.
