Sunset League finals

FOUNTAIN VALLEY — Newport Harbor High senior Charlotte Skjonsby finished fifth Thursday at Mile Square Golf Club to advance to the CIF Southern Section Southern Individual Regionals.

It was redemption for Skjonsby, who missed out on the league’s final spot last year after losing in a playoff. The Sunset League takes the top seven.

Skjsonby shot nine-over-par 81 Thursday. She shot three-over 40 at Lakewood Golf Course Wednesday. She’ll compete at the Southern Regionals Oct. 31 at Recreation Park Golf Course in Long Beach.

Newport Harbor senior Kate Lamas, who shot 45 Wednesday, shot 83 and finished in a tie for eighth to grab a second alternate spot for the Southern Regionals.

Los Alamitos junior Esther Lee, who shot even-par Wednesday, won the Sunset League individual title after shooting one-over Thursday.

GIRLS’ VOLLEYBALL

Corona del Mar def. Irvine

IRVINE — Chrissy Watson had six kills to help the Sea Kings to a 25-8, 25-20, 25-12 Pacific Coast League win Thursday.

Shannon Griffin, Grace Kennedy and Brittany Taylor had five kills each for CdM (21-2, 7-0 in league), ranked No. 1 in the CIF Southern Section Division I-A poll.

GIRLS’ TENNIS

Newport Harbor 18, Marina 0

NEWPORT BEACH — The Sailors won 108 of 112 games played in the Sunset League match Thursday at Newport Harbor High.

Senior Cece Beck and junior Kelsey Christiansen won, 6-0, 6-1, before being subbed out. Sophomore Kate Knight won two singles sets 6-0, 6-0 before she was subbed out.

Senior Blake Bakkila won 6-0, 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1 singles for Newport Harbor (13-1, 7-0 in league), ranked No. 3 in CIF Southern Section Division II. Seniors Christina and Robin Young won, 6-0, 6-0, 6-1 at No. 1 doubles.

Coach Kristen Case said Newport Harbor can clinch its fourth straight league title by defeating Los Alamitos on Tuesday at El Dorado Park. The Sailors topped the Griffins, 17-1, in the teams’ first meeting.

Corona del Mar 12, Irvine 6

IRVINE — Freshman Riley Gerdau won two of three singles sets for CdM in the Pacific Coast League match Thursday at Irvine High.

The Sea Kings (5-7, 4-3 in league) also won eight of nine doubles sets. Kenzie Purcifull and Ariana Naaseh swept, 6-2, 6-1, 6-2, at No. 1 doubles, while Kimmia Naaseh and Olivia Laws swept, 6-4, 6-4, 6-2, at No. 2 doubles.

Skylar Dapp and Olivia Dajee subbed in to win the other two doubles sets for the Sea Kings.

CdM plays host to Woodbridge on Tuesday, a virtual must-win for the Sea Kings’ playoff hopes.

BOYS’ WATER POLO

Corona del Mar 24, Irvine 8

IRVINE — Jack Harryman and Ben Zepfel scored three goals each for the Sea Kings in the Pacific Coast League game Thursday at Woollett Aquatic Center.

Charlie Howarth had five assists in game that saw 25 who played for CdM (15-4, 7-0 in league).

The Sea Kings play at Newport Harbor in the Battle of the Bay Saturday at 2 p.m.
