College Roundup: Betts runs for 190 yards, 4 TDs
SAN DIEGO — San Diego Mesa could not stop the state’s rushing leader Saturday.
Domenic Betts rushed for 190 yards and four touchdowns on 23 carries to lead the Orange Coast College football team to a 38-17 road victory.
Bill Chimphalee had 90 yards on seven carries to contribute to the vaunted Pirates’ rushing attack.
The Pirates (2-3) scored all of their points in the first half. Betts scored two touchdowns in each quarter. He scored on a 49-yard touchdown run 87 seconds into the game. He also had TD runs of 1, 3 and 8.
OCC quarterback Mike Frank threw a six-yard touchdown pass to Tyler Duncan with 17 seconds left before halftime.
The Pirates outrushed the Olympians, 308-148.
San Diego Mesa dropped to 1-4.

COSTA MESA — Kevin Cornwall scored the game-winning goal for the Lions in the 77th minute to upset the No. 17-ranked team in the Golden State Athletic Conference opener Saturday.
Edgar Hernandez assisted on Cornwall’s goal. Nikola Ilich scored in the 25th minute for Vanguard (7-3) for the game’s first goal. Lions’ goalie Cody Adams had three saves.
The Master’s is 7-1-1.

COSTA MESA — The Lions suffered their first loss of the season in the Golden State Athletic Conference opener Saturday.
Lindsey Holmankelley scored in the 10th minute and Amanda Couch scored in the 67th minute for Vanguard (8-1). Couch’s goal tied the game, 2-2.
The Master’s, ranked No. 15 in the NAIA, is 7-3.

COSTA MESA — Jamie Heenan had 19 kills and 14 digs to lead the No. 21-ranked Lions to a 23-25, 25-15, 25-16, 25-18 Golden State Athletic Conference win Saturday.
KaUwila Lavea had 15 kills, Alexandra Leja had 26 assists and Carly Maxwell had 24 assists for Vanguard (14-7, 3-3 in conference).
Hope International is 4-13, 0-6.

SoCal Tournament
LONG BEACH — No. 7-ranked UC Irvine split a pair of games at Long Beach State Saturday.
Nick Pfeil scored three goals and Jacob Mourer added two in a 9-8 win over UC Davis Saturday morning. Pfeil scored his last goal with 6:56 left in the fourth quarter for a 9-7 lead.
In UCI’s second game of the day, the ‘Eaters (9-5) lost to top-ranked USC, 11-5. Mitch Wise scored a pair of third-quarter goals for UCI, which fell to the Trojans for the third consecutive Saturday.
The ‘Eaters face fifth-ranked Pepperdine in a fifth-place bracket game Sunday morning at 8:30 at the Joint Forces Training Base in Los Alamitos.

UC Irvine results
Sophomore Steven Melena and junior Rex Nelson led the UCI men at the Bill Dellinger Invitational Saturday.
Melena finished 29th in 24 minutes, 33.52 seconds and Nelson 30th in 24:35.11 over 8,000 meters at the Springfield (Ore.) Country Club.
UCI placed sixth. Wisconsin won the team title.
Sophomore Tommy Newton-Neal led another group of UCI men in the Pomona-Pitzer Invitational.
Newton-Neal placed 12th of 180 runners with a time of 25:49.3 over 8,000 meters.
UCI placed seventh in the 13-team meet. Cal State San Marcos was team champion.
One the women’s side, senior Melissa Mead led the Anteaters at the Bill Dellinger Invitational.
Mead placed 40th in 17:49.05 over the 5,000-meter course. Host Oregon won the meet. UCI was ninth place.
Junior Nicole Mendoza was the top finisher for UCI in the Pomona-Pitzer Invitational at the Pomona College course Saturday.
Mendoza placed 49th of 200 runners with a time of 23:34.4 over 6,000 meters. UCI finished 10th of 15 teams. Cal State San Marcos won the title.
