Briefs: Locals star at beach tourney
Newport Harbor High incoming senior Cinnamon Sary teamed up with fellow Sailors Torey Thompson, Carol Bockraph and Tatum Norton to claim the girls’ gold division title at Newport Harbor’s Fours on the Beach High School Volleyball Challenge in Newport Beach on Friday.
The foursome went 5-0 during the one-day tournament, capping the day off with a 25-13 victory against Newport Harbor’s Kasey Thompson, Hunter Jennings, Holly Patrick, Sierra Brown and Katie Curci.
In the boys’ gold division, former Corona del Mar standouts Blaine Nielsen, Sam Stafford and Danny Baker, and Newport Beach resident Tom Hastings won the title.
The foursome defeated a co-ed team comprised of CdM recent graduate Evan Dean, Newport Harbor recent graduate Maddy Brown, CdM’s Mary McKennon and Spencer Buckley, 26-24.
An eighth-grade team won the girls’ silver division. Remy Wilson of Ensign Intermediate and Payton Carter of CdM Middle School led the way and Jessie Harris and Cammie Dorn also contributed.

Manderino earns All-American honors
Newport Harbor High product Kathryn Manderino, playing college water polo for Concordia, has been named honorable mention Division I All-American by the Assn. of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches.
Manderino, a sophomore two-meter player, was second on Concordia with 87 goals. Manderino led the Eagles with 45 ejections drawn.
Manderino and teammate Lybov Tchougounova, who was also an honorable mention, are the first All-Americans in Concordia program history. Coach Steve Carrera’s Eagles finished their season 19-20. The 19 wins are also a single-season program record.
Manderino previously attended San Francisco State, which does not have a women’s water polo program.
