District tourney winds down
The stage was set Tuesday for the start of the Little League District 62 All-Star divisional championship series.
Following a four-day break because of the Fourth of July holiday, the annual district tournament resumed with elimination games played in the Majors (12-year-old), 9/10, 10/11 and Juniors divisions. The divisional series, which started Wednesday, are as follows:
Majors: Once-beaten Huntington Valley vs. undefeated Ocean View at Mile Square Park (Field 15). Ocean View needs just one win, and Huntington Valley two, to win the title.
9/10: Once-beaten Ocean View vs. undefeated Robinwood at Mile Square Park (Field 14). Robinwood needs just one win, and Ocean View two, to win the title.
10/11: Once-beaten Huntington Valley vs. undefeated Ocean View at Mile Square Park (Field 12). Ocean View needs just one win, and Huntington Valley two, to win the title.
Juniors: Once-beaten Ocean View vs. undefeated Huntington Valley at Marina Park. Huntington Valley needs just one win, and Ocean View two, to win the title.
The scores from the series openers weren’t available at press time. Should a second game in the Majors, 9/10 or 10/11 divisions be necessary, each will start at 6 p.m. Thursday. If a second game in the Junior division is necessary, it will start at 5 p.m. Thursday.

10/11 All-Stars
Huntington Valley 3, Costa Mesa National 1: Pitcher Jared Henry tamed Costa Mesa on Tuesday ( as Huntington Valley stayed alive for the crown and eliminated Costa Mesa National in the process. Henry retired nine of the final 11 hitters he faced, striking out six of the final seven. He gave up five hits and Costa Mesa scored an unearned run in the first inning.
Huntington Valley scored its three runs in the fourth. Austin Heberden’s run-scoring double to right-center field drove in Ethan Kemp to tie the score. Huntington Valley scored the go-ahead runs on a wild pitch and a fielding error.

Major All-Stars
Ocean View 7, Huntington Valley 1: In a game between two unbeaten teams played June 30, Huntington Valley pitcher Jacob Twining held Ocean View in check until the fourth inning, where Nick Pratto and Trevor Windisch hit back-to-back home runs to put Ocean View into the lead.
Hagen Danner added a three-run double and Jason Mayorga smashed a two-run homer for the final tally. Danner, Pratto, and Windisch combined on the mound to strike out 12.

8/9 All-Stars
Ocean View won the district championship Saturday by defeating Robinwood, 13-3. Ocean View is representing District 62 in Section 10 play, which began Wednesday at Ladera Ranch.
District 62 was holding a 8/9 division All-Star tournament for the first time.
In Saturday’s final, Noah Karliner hit a grand slam in the first inning and Edward Pelc threw the first 3 2/3 innings for Ocean View in a game called after four innings.
Ocean View started the tournament June 29 and rode a two-run double by Noah Madole and the pitching of Pelc, Jared Reyes, Jared Manzo and Karliner to score an 8-1 win over Robinwood. On June 30, Manzo and Zach Lyons combined on a one-hitter as Ocean View downed Huntington Valley, 12-2, in a game called after four innings.
The Ocean View 8/9 All-Stars are: Luke Adelman, Jag Burden, Lucas Catano, Sinjin Choi, Jason Gagnon, Noah Karliner, Zachary Lyons, Noah Madole, Jared Manzo, Edward Pelc, Jared Reyes and Stella Ziegler. The team is managed by Vince Manzo and coaches are Randy Karliner and Kent Madole.
