Pitz earns runner-up honors
Taylor Pitz of Laguna Beach finished second in the Open Womenâs division of the third contest of the National Scholastic Surfing Assn. 2010-11 Open Season on Wednesday at the Del Mar Jetty at Camp Pendleton.
Pitz scored 10.5 points.
The next NSSA Open Season contest is Nov. 6 and 7 at the south side of the Huntington Beach Pier.

Van Alphen wins three matches
Sydney Van Alphen of Laguna Beach won all three matches she competed in Sunday at the Orange County Junior Open Tennis Tournament. The 11-year-old, who had a first-round bye, defeated Danielle Wilson (Newport Beach), 6-1, 6-0, in the round of 64, then swept Amy Gaal (Hermosa Beach), 6-0, 6-0, in the round of 32. She teamed with Emily Maxfield of Murrieta in doubles play and the duo defeated Hannah Anzo (Temecula) and Jessica Anzo (Temecula), 6-4, 6-4.
Van Alphen will take on Jenna Moustafa of Newport Coast at 6 p.m. Saturday in the girlsâ singles round of 16.
A week earlier, Van Alphen of finished in fourth- place in the girlsâ 12 singles division of the Dunlop Junior Tennis Championships in Palm Desert.

Boysâ water polo fundraiser is Monday
The Laguna Beach High boysâ water polo boosters will stage a fundraiser at 6 p.m. Monday at Dizzâs As Is in Laguna Beach. The cost is $75 per person and includes a welcome cocktail, dinner and a silent auction that offers tickets to sporting events, restaurant coupons, vacation trips and more.
Guest speakers include Monte Nitzkowski (1952 U.S. Olympian, Olympic water polo coach, National Team coach, member International Swimming Hall of Fame, USA Water Polo Hall of Fame), David âJayâ Flood (Commissioner of Aquatics, 1984 Olympic Games XXIII, member USA Water Polo Hall of Fame) and Erich Fischer (former Stanford water polo athlete, U.S. National Team member, 1992 U.S . Olympian).

Boysâ hoops Christmas tree fundraiser
The Laguna Beach High boysâ basketball program is holding a fundraiser by selling Christmas trees now through a pre-ordering deadline of Nov. 12. Trees will be delivered from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Dec. 5 at the Laguna Beach School District parking lot.
Home delivery also can be purchased for an additional $10. All trees are cut two days before delivery. The fundraiser is in support of the boysâ basketball program.

Girlsâ volleyball alumni match is Nov. 5
The Laguna Beach girlsâ volleyball program has set a date of Nov. 5 for its annual Alumni Match. The festivities begin at 5 p.m., with the frosh/soph team taking on the junior varsity squad, followed by the varsity team against the alumni at 6:15 p.m. An auction and raffle will be held with proceeds going to the girlsâ volleyball program. The public is welcome to attend the event.

Breakers boysâ polo replaced at No. 1
After having a stranglehold on the top spot for the past month, the Laguna Beach High boysâ water polo team has been replaced at No. 1 in this weekâs CIF Southern Section Division 3 poll. Damien of La Verne is the divisionâs new No. 1 team. The Spartans, ranked fourth last week, moved to the head of the rankings after defeating Laguna last Friday. The Breakers are now ranked second.
The rest of the top 10 includes Palos Verdes, Mira Costa, Capistrano Valley, Aliso Niguel, La Canada, Santa Monica, South Pasadena and Peninsula.
In girlsâ volleyball, Laguna again comes in at No. 5 in the Division 1-A poll. Marymount continues its hold on No. 1 and is followed by Redlands East Valley, Corona del Mar, Notre Dame Academy, Laguna Beach, Los Osos, Valencia/Valencia, Vista Murrieta, Upland and Saugus. El Dorado and San Luis Obispo fell out of the top 10.
The Laguna Beach High boysâ cross-country team has moved from seventh to sixth in the latest Division 4 rankings. Bosco Tech continues to top the poll and is followed by Notre Dame/Sherman Oaks, Harvard/Westlake, JSerra, Crespi, Laguna Beach, Salesian, Maranatha, Oaks Christian, Nordhoff, Big Bear, L.A. Baptist and Paraclete.
