Dent vs. Federer

Former Corona del Mar High tennis standout Taylor Dent will play world No. 2 Roger Federer in a second-round match Thursday at the If Stockholm Open in Sweden.

Dent, 29, is playing in his first tournament since making it to the Round of 64 at the U.S. Open. Dent, who now lives in Florida, is currently ranked No. 101 in the world. He has been ranked as high as No. 21, in 2005.

Federer, who many consider to be the greatest to ever play the sport, has won a record 16 singles Grand Slam tournaments. He also won his only previous match against Dent, in Miami in 2009.

UCI hosts regional

UC Irvine will host the 2010 USTA/ITA Men’s Tennis Southwest Regional Thursday through Monday on the UCI campus.

Matches will be played at the Anteater Tennis Stadium as well as the Anteater Recreation Center.

Singles and doubles matches begin at 8:30 a.m. on Thursday and Friday with competition beginning at 9:00 a.m. Saturday, 10:00 a.m. on Sunday and the finals at beginning on 11:00 a.m. Monday.

USC’s Daniel Nguyen is the tournament’s No. 1 singles seed, while UCLA’s Nick Meister is seeded second.

UC Irvine’s Chris Kearney is the No. 3 seed. Meister and Amit Inbar are seeded No. 1 in the doubles.

The Southwest Region includes UC Irvine, Arizona, Cal Poly, Hawaii, Loyola Marymount, Pepperdine, San Diego, San Diego State, UCLA, UC Riverside, UC Santa Barbara and USC.
