Costa Mesa High quarterback Nathan Alvis topped 100 yards through the air and on the ground, and had a hand in a career-high six touchdowns in the Mustangs’ 53-17 nonleague win over La Quinta, Thursday at Bolsa Grande High.

The left-handed junior threw four touchdown passes and ran for two touchdowns. He recorded 121 yards on 11-of-17 passing and 113 yards rushing on 17 carries.

Sage Hill School senior tailback Taylor Ross is inching closer to the school’s single-season rushing record. After a 172-yard effort in Saturday’s 56-13 win over Viewpoint, Ross is at 1,008 yards for the season for the Lightning (5-0). The record is Keya Manshadi’s 1,060 yards in 2005.

Ross, averaging an even 12 yards per carry, is a good bet to set the record this week as the Lightning play at home against Pasadena Poly on Friday. After he was handed the stat sheet Saturday afternoon, Sage Hill Coach J.R. Tolver was yet again impressed.

“I’m excited about him,” Tolver said. “I think on the long [71-yard] touchdown run you saw, that’s a run he would have got caught on last year. He’s not the fastest guy on the field, but this team goes as he goes. He’s just as gritty and gutty as they come. I love that kid, man. I’m super proud of him and he’s going to take us a long way this year.”

Corona del Mar High turned to another wide receiver to play running back.

Erik Fisher stepped up and ran well in the Sea Kings’ 52-13 nonleague rout of Magnolia at Western High Saturday. The junior finished with 163 yards and one touchdown on 13 carries, helping CdM move on after losing the Battle of the Bay to Newport Harbor the previous week.

The Sea Kings (4-1), ranked sixth in the CIF Southern Section Southern Division poll, played without running back Jeff Condino. The senior is out with a shoulder injury.

Senior Clay Reinhardt, a receiver, started the season at running back and performed well in the first three games, gaining at least 100 yards on the ground each time.

Reinhardt carried the ball only five times for 33 yards and one touchdown against Magnolia. Reinhardt played more at receiver and finished with four catches for 60 yards and one touchdown.

Thirteen hours after Buzzy Yokoyama dislocated his right kneecap Friday against visiting San Clemente, Jeff Yokoyama said his son showed up to Newport Harbor’s film session the next morning on crutches, a brace on the leg, and a smile on his face.

Jeff said it was important for Buzzy to attend the session and rejoin the Sailors after they lost a 21-20 nonleague heartbreaker in overtime. Buzzy missed the second half after going down with an injury midway through the second quarter.

The 5-foot-9, 198-pounder had 82 yards and one touchdown on 16 carries before he was taken to Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian in Newport Beach, where Jeff said Buzzy had an MRI on the knee.

The knee, which will not require surgery, did not bother Buzzy as much as his stomach.

“He said, ‘Dad, I’m really hungry,’ ” said Jeff, who learned his son usually eats at halftime during games. “He’s in good spirits. We’re not sure when he will be able to come back, but we’re going to get him checked out by a couple more doctors.”

Jeff said Buzzy is hopeful he will return to Newport Harbor (3-1).

Yokoyama has been a major threat in his first year as the starting tailback. He has recorded 752 yards and eight touchdowns on 92 carries.

Jeff said it is unlikely Buzzy will play Friday in the Sailors’ final nonleague game. Newport Harbor, ranked seventh in the CIF Southern Section Pac-5 Division poll, travels to Manhattan Beach to play Mira Costa (1-3).

Estancia High Coach Mike Bargas said Sunday night that senior tight end/linebacker Omar Gutierrez’s injury is not expected to keep him out of the Eagles’ lineup this week.

Bargas said Gutierrez, a two-time Newport-Mesa Dream Team performer, was at a film session Friday and he had bruising in his upper gluteus/side. Gutierrez was hurt in the first quarter of Thursday night’s 31-7 loss to Northwood and came out complaining of back pain.

“As of Friday he was walking around,” Bargas said. “We’ll have to see when we practice, but I haven’t heard anything from my coaching staff or the players about him missing the game. We need him out there [against Beckman Friday].”

Newport Harbor Coach Jeff Brinkley is not one who plays for ties.

In 25 years with the Sailors, Brinkley has only three ties in 292 games. When Newport Harbor was faced with an opportunity to go for the victory in overtime at home against San Clemente, Brinkley went for it.

The Sailors had just scored a touchdown on an eight-yard run by Diller that cut the deficit to 21-20. An extra-point kick ties the game and a two-point conversion wins it.

Brinkley’s call looked even better after Newport Harbor moved a yard-and-a-half closer after the Tritons jumped offside. With the ball between the one and two, Newport Harbor ran a play to the left, behind Stanford-bound senior tackle JB Salem.

San Clemente stopped Diller from reaching the end zone and there went the Sailors’ undefeated season.

Newport Harbor senior quarterback Austin Rios completed 81% of his passes Friday. He was 13 of 16 passing for 142 yards.

CdM senior Andrew Boehm has a Newport-Mesa-area-best nine field goals this season.

Estancia’s offense has been struggling, and Bargas tried to shake it up in the second half by inserting reserve quarterback Brad Wilson. The sophomore attempted just two passes over two series, though, before Bargas brought back in senior quarterback John Diego to finish the game.

“He was great about it,” Bargas said of Diego’s reaction to the temporary benching. “He understood. I found him on the sidelines and he goes, ‘I understand, coach.’ I know it’s tough, he’s a senior and all that, but I was trying to find a spark somehow so I put Brad in there. Sometimes you’ve just got to make moves like that.”

Diego, reinserted on the Eagles’ final series, completed five of 11 passes for 34 yards and an interception. He did, however, have scrambles of 11 and 10 yards on that final series. The two plays were the team’s second- and third-longest runs of the night.

Bargas said it has been tough on his team continually having games on Thursdays. The Eagles get just two days of practice each week before the game.

Each of Estancia’s first four games has been on a Thursday night. This week, the Eagles finally play on a Friday against Beckman, so Bargas said they’ll get an extra day of practice.

Costa Mesa senior Andrew Albers, a 6-foot-8, 285-pound right tackle, planned to attend UCLA’s game against Washington State at the Rose Bowl Saturday, said his father, Frank Albers, on Thursday.

The Bruins are recruiting the senior, who has also caught the interest of USC and Notre Dame. Frank said his son is not leaning toward one school.

Costa Mesa (1-4) avoided its second 0-5 start in three years.

The Mustangs have a bye this week before opening Orange Coast League play against Godinez (3-1) at Segerstrom High on Oct. 14. The Grizzlies suffered their first loss of the season last week in a 17-14 setback to Sunny Hills.

The Sea Kings are looking to rebound in league after going 0-5 in league last season, its first winless league season since 1997.

Sage Hill’s game at Viewpoint was cramped, with just three rows of bleachers extending along one sideline. In addition, it was only about 10 to 15 feet from the sideline to the bleachers.

Viewpoint had a small but vocal student contingent inside its own 20-yard line in the first half, taunting Sage Hill. But they were quieted after the Lightning scored five first-half touchdowns on that side of the field, and especially early in the fourth quarter when junior Eric Cheng ripped off a 94-yard touchdown run.

“When he took that 94-yarder to the house, I told him before,” senior quarterback Randall Mycorn said. “I was like, ‘Shut them up.’ ”

Sage had to contend with Viewpoint sophomore running back Adam Markun, who ran for 191 yards and a touchdown. But he didn’t hurt the Lightning as much as last year, when Tolver said Markun ran wild on Sage in a junior varsity game and scored six or seven touchdowns.

Markun ran for 109 yards after halftime Saturday, and Tolver said much of it was a result of missed tackles by the Lightning. He said he appreciated the effort, though, from a gritty player cut from the same cloth as Ross.
