Harbor Day now on top
Move over TeWinkle Intermediate boys and make way for Harbor Day.
The Harbor Day boys won the overall title in the Coastal Athletic League Junior High Track and Field Championships June 3.
TeWinkle was seeking its fourth straight title and had won 24 of the past 25. But Harbor Day came away with the championship with a strong showing in the eighth-grade division.
Harbor Day won with 204 points, 17 more than TeWinkle. Corona del Mar was fifth with 84, Ensign sixth with 77.5 and Costa Mesa seventh with 18.
Each year, the running community looks forward to the junior track and field championships to see who will be the up-and-coming talent. They also expect TeWinkle to win in the boys’ division.
But Harbor Day had something to say about those expectations. The track and field team helped Harbor Day end the school year on a high note.
Harbor Day won the eighth-grade boys’ division and the girls’ ‘C’ division, and placed second in the seventh-grade boys’ division.
On the girls’ side, CdM came in second place overall with 168.5 points, behind champion Dwyer with 198. Ensign was third with 155.5 points, Harbor Day fifth with 90, TeWinkle sixth with 57 and Costa Mesa seventh with 46.
Harbor Day dominated in the eighth-grade boys’ division, winning five events.
Hale Furey won the 800 meters in 2 minutes, 14.3 seconds.
Connor Kelter and Nic Sargeant tied for first place in the long jump. Their winning mark was 17 feet, 7 inches.
Ramsey Hufford won the shot put (50-2).
Braden Brahs also contributed to Harbor Day’s winning effort by taking first place in the high jump (5-10).
Harbor Day’s 4x100 relay team won in 48.7.
TeWinkle had a great showing in the seventh-grade boys’ division.
TeWinkle’s Geo Gonzalez won the 200 meters in 25.30. Brandon Mendez won the 400 in 60.90. Teammate Brandon Cortez took first in the 800 in 2:28.3. Dalton Odaly also won for TeWinkle taking the top spot in the long jump (15-1 1/2 ).
TeWinkle also won the 4x100 relay in 52 seconds.
Harbor Day’s Parker Reposa won two events. He took first in the 100 meters in 12 seconds, setting a new CAL record. The previous record was 12.10 seconds. He also won the shot put (41-7).
Harbor Day’s Landon Thies won the 1,600 meters in 5:12.40
There were some recordbreaking performances in the boys’ ‘C’ division.
TeWinkle’s David Peña broke two records. He won the 400 in 58.50, breaking the CAL record, which was 59.60. He also won the 800 in 2:15.20, breaking the CAL record.
TeWinkle’s Juan Padilla won the 200 meters in 25.60, breaking the CAL record, which was 25.90. He also won the 100 meters in 12.10 seconds.
Harbor Day’s Kavi Sakraney won the high jump (5-2), which tied the CAL record.
Costa Mesa’s Shawn Boyd won the long jump (15-0).
TeWinkle won the 4x100 relay in 53.90
TeWinkle’s Yamili Burgos won two events in the eighth-grade girls’ division. She won the 1,600 in 6:11.2 and the 800 in 2:42.0.
TeWinkle’s Persis Williams won the 200 in 27.40
Corona del Mar won the 4x100 relay in 54.50, breaking the CAL record, which was 54.60.
Ensign’s Sammy Yeager won the long jump (13-10) in the seventh-grade girls’ division.
CdM had four event winners.
Costa Mesa’s Mycol Smith stood out in the girls’ ‘C’ division, winning three events. She won the 100 meters in 12.90, which tied the CAL record. She also won the 400 in 64.50 and the long jump in 13-2 1/2
Harbor Day’s Ellen Naruse won the 1,600 meters in 5:44.0, breaking the CAL record.
Harbor Day’s Kirsten Hansen won the 800 in 2:36.80.
Harbor Day’s Halland McKenna won the high jump (4-8).
