High School Baseball: Tars have top rook

Newport Harbor High sophomore Matt Carpenter has been named the Sunset League Rookie of the Year for baseball, and three other Newport Harbor players have earned first-team honors.

Senior catcher Blake Davey, senior outfielder Dillan Freiberg and senior utility player Ryan Albert were all named first-team at their respective positions for Newport Harbor, which finished third in league and advanced to the playoffs for the first time since 1990.

Carpenter, a first baseman and third baseman, batted .356 with eight home runs and 29 runs batted in for the Sailors; the 29 RBIs tied him for the team lead.

Davey, a repeat first-teamer, led the team with his .455 batting average and added three home runs and 29 RBIs, which tied him with Carpenter for the team lead. His walk-off RBI double scored Steve Guerin as Newport beat Roosevelt, 3-2, in a CIF Southern Section Division I wild-card game.

Freiberg, a repeat first-teamer, batted .347 with three home runs and 14 RBIs.

Albert, bound for Princeton, hit .282 with a team-high nine home runs and 20 RBIs.

Newport Harbor players ion the second team included senior infielder Austin Wobrock and Guerin, a junior outfielder.

Edison took three of the top four awards, as junior Eric Snyder was named Player of the Year, junior Henry Owens named Pitcher of the Year and Steve Lambright took Coach of the Year honors.

The Tars went 17-11, 6-9 in league. They fell in the first round of the Division I playoffs at Camarillo, 10-6.
