High School Roundup: Laguna Beach earns victory against Costa Mesa

Laguna Beach 13, Costa Mesa 6

Aidan Booth went two for two with four runs batted in, clinching the host Breakers’ 11th Orange Coast League title on Wednesday.

Jack Loechner homered and drove in three runs for Laguna Beach (17-8, 12-0 in league).

Jay Mann was two for four with two RBIs for Costa Mesa (10-17, 5-7).

Calvary Chapel 4, Estancia 0

Brian Rodriguez tied the Estancia single-season hit record of 42 during an Orange Coast League game at home on Wednesday.

Jake Covey went six innings, giving up two earned runs and four hits.

Estancia is in second place in league at 9-3, two games ahead of Calvary Chapel. Three games remain in league.

BOYS’ VOLLEYBALL

Newport Harbor def. Huntington Beach

Cole Pender finished with nine kills, helping the visiting Sailors claim an undefeated Sunset League championship on Tuesday.

Newport Harbor (25-3, 10-0 in league), ranked No. 4 in the CIF Southern Section Division 1 poll, learns Friday who they open the playoffs with next week.

The No. 8 Oilers finished tied for second in league with No. 7 Edison at 7-3.

St. Margaret’s def. Sage Hill

SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO — Albert Son produced nine kills for the Lightning in the Academy League match that host St. Margaret’s swept, 25-17, 25-14, 25-17, on Tuesday.

Brethren Christian 17, Whitney 1

The Warriors (5-10, 1-5) picked up their first Academy League win of the season.

Whitney (8-13, 1-6) won the first meeting, 12-0.

Sunset League

Los Alamitos 16, Marina 0

The Vikings (12-12, 5-3) mustered just two hits against the Griffins’ trio of Ryan Denhart, Brianna Jewett, and Sarah Ladd.

Emily Rush had a double, with Ryan King notching the other hit.

Cierra Valenzona had a home run and three RBIs for Los Alamitos. Berlyn Carreon also drove in three runs.

Los Alamitos (22-3, 8-0) clinched the Sunset League title with the win.

Marina will host Huntington Beach on Thursday in a battle for second place in league.

Edison 5, Newport Harbor 2

A three-run fifth inning helped the Chargers (13-8, 4-4) stave off a late rally from the Sailors (6-18, 0-8).

Alex Loomis, Rachel Abboud, and Geo Ligget had hits in the frame to pad a 2-0 lead.

Talia Hannapple allowed five hits and struck out three in a complete-game victory for the Chargers.

Newport Harbor shortstop Diana Surber went two for four with a double and two RBIs.

Huntington Beach 4, Fountain Valley 0

Grace Uribe allowed five hits and struck out three in recording the shutout against the Barons (13-15, 2-6).

The Oilers (15-9, 5-3) moved into a tie for second place in the Sunset League with Marina (12-12, 5-3).

Chance Burden had a double and two RBIs. Allee Bunker and Kiki Foley also had doubles, and Jadelyn Allchin added a triple for Huntington Beach.

Orange Coast League

Calvary Chapel 10, Costa Mesa 0

Calvary Chapel (8-11) ran its record to 6-1 in league, as the Eagles continue to fight for the chance to share the league title with Godinez.

The Eagles’ opportunity in the rematch comes next Monday.

Costa Mesa drops to 7-14 overall, 3-4 in league. The Mustangs need to beat Estancia in the second round of the Battle of the Bell on Monday to keep their playoff hopes alive.

Godinez 16, Laguna Beach 0

The Grizzlies (16-5, 7-0) maintained possession of first place in the Orange Coast League with a 22-hit attack against the Breakers (7-12-1, 1-6).

Estancia 11, Saddleback 0

Brittany Walker struck out six in a no-hitter, with Samantha Ochoa calling the game behind the plate.

Micaiah Watanabe-Patterson had a triple with two2 RBIs. Jessica Garcia also drove in a pair for the Eagles (12-9, 4-3), who are in third place in the Orange Coast League.
