Carl Agnew said Tuesday night that he has resigned after 11 seasons as Los Amigos High head football coach to accept the defensive coordinator position at Lakewood.

Agnew said he developed a friendship with Lakewood coach Scott Meyer when Meyer was the Corona del Mar coach. From 2011-13, the Sea Kings and Lobos played in the CIF Southern Section Southern Division playoffs.

“We built up a friendship, a mutual respect for each other,” said Agnew, 39. “That’s one of the reasons why I chose to interview for him. And it was closer to home [in La Habra] for me. Lakewood is a lot closer than Los Amigos.”

Agnew, who will continue to teach history at Los Amigos, has 10-year-old twin daughters, Nataly and Kylie.

“This is the start of my 19th year at Los Amigos as an assistant coach, substitute teacher, teacher and the head football coach,” he said. “I think it’s about time to spend more time with my family … I felt that I neglected that a bit for a while there. Maybe when [my daughters] are in high school I’ll get back into head coaching again.”

Agnew finished 57-65 overall at Los Amigos. The Lobos won a share of the Garden Grove League title in 2008, his first year in charge, and finished second to Garden Grove in five other seasons.

Los Amigos went 3-7 this past season and was winless at 0-5 in the league. The Lobos started 3-1 but injuries set in, as running back Brian Pacheco suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament and quarterback Brandon Tinoco fractured his throwing hand.

“I’m really happy with what we did,” Agnew said. “It’s not a stellar record … but we were competitive with kids who showed up and had never played football. It was a great accomplishment for us.”
