Golden State Athletic Conference Tournament

REDWOOD CITY — Vanguard University won its opening-round game on Sunday, but lost on Monday and Tuesday and was eliminated in the semifinals at Canada College.

The Lions topped Biola 16-3 on Sunday, then fell to top-seeded Hope International 6-2 on Monday.

On Tuesday, the Lions came up short in a seesaw affair against The Master’s, which claimed a 14-11 triumph to advance to the championship round.

Vanguard (32-23, which finished tied for second with Biola in the regular-season standings), will hope for an at-large berth to the NAIA Tournament.

Against Biola, senior Brock Eissman hit two home runs and had four RBIs to lead the attack.

Tanner Perry was three for four with a homer and two RBIs, while Michael Fuchs was three for five with one RBI and Brandon Sandoval was two for four with three RBIs, three runs and one stolen base.

Monty McCasland allowed three runs on three hits in 8 2/3 innings to earn the win and improve to 8-4.

Against HIU, Trai Patrick was two for four with a homer, while Shane Elias-Calles was two for four for the Lions.

Vanguard scored seven runs in the second inning against TMU, but could not hold the lead.

Sandoval was three for five with two RBIs and two runs, while Patrick was three for six with two RBIs.

Eissman was two for six with one RBI and Fuchs was two for four.

Sandoval was six for 13 in the tournament to up his season batting average to .403. His eight homers tie Eissman for second on the team, one shy of team leader Patrick, who has nine.

Cal State Northridge 2, UC Irvine 1

The host Anteaters had just four hits and allowed the winning run to score in the eighth inning on a wild pitch in the rubber game of a three-game Big West Conference series on Sunday.

Cole Spear allowed five hits and one earned run in eight innings to absorb the tough-luck loss and fall to 3-4.

Ryan Fitzpatrick was two for three with one RBI for the ’Eaters (17-28, 4-11 in conference).

The Matadors improved to 23-25, 10-8.

MEN’S SWIMMING

State championships

LOS ANGELES — Golden West College sophomore Chadd Mauer anchored three victorious relays and won the 100-yard freestyle to lead the Rustlers to the team title at the California Community College Athletic Assn. championships, contested Thursday through Saturday at East Los Angeles College.

Golden West, guided by first-year coach Tracy Mauer, Chadd’s father, totaled 533 points to earn the program’s fourth state crown in the last five years.

Orange Coast College finished seventh at the state meet, with freshman Danny Hadden posting the top individual performance.

Hadden was second in the 100 butterfly (50.41 seconds), was third in the 50 free (20.82) and third in the 100 free (45.53) for the Pirates.

WOMEN’S SWIMMING

State championship

LOS ANGELES — Sophomore Sierra Cox won the 400-yard individual medley to lead Orange Coast College to a seventh-place finish in the California Community College Athletic Assn. championships, contested Thursday through Saturday at East Los Angeles College.

Cox’s winning time was four minutes, 35.99 seconds. She was second in the 500 freestyle (5:04.13) and fourth in the 200 butterfly (2:11.46).

OCC’s Katya Kurjakowsky was second in the 1,650 free in 17:47.66.
