College Roundup: Vanguard defeats San Diego Christian in GSAC Tournament

Golden State Athletic Conference Tournament

Host Vanguard University defeated San Diego Christian, 1-0, in an elimination game Wednesday afternoon, after falling to William Jessup, 9-1, in the winner’s bracket semifinals earlier in the day.

The top-seeded Lions (44-13), who won the GSAC regular-season title, will meet William Jessup on Thursday at 1 p.m. at Vanguard. Should Vanguard win, the two teams would play again in the double-elimination format at 3:30 p.m. to decide the tournament winner.

Against San Diego Christian, Summer Penner singled in the only run in the fourth inning, while Courtney Thornhill allowed five hits over seven innings for a complete game win.

Thornhill, who took the loss against Jessup, is now 16-5.

Taylor Wilson was two for three with one RBI in the loss to Jessup, against which the Lions produced five hits. Wilson was one of four players to produce one hit apiece against San Diego Christian.

Big West Conference Championship

SANTA BARBARA – UC Irvine junior David Kim finished eighth to lead the Anteaters, who finished sixth as a team in the 54-hole event completed Wednesday at Sandpiper Golf Club.

Kim shot two-under-par 70 in the final round and 215 total to earn his eighth top-10 finish of the season and his top finish in conference competition.

Senior Bryan Shin was 21st at 218, junior Ryan O’Connor was 26th at 220, junior Jonathan Young was 32nd at 222, and freshman Jonathan Kang was 33rd at 223.

UCI’s team score of 870 was 18 shots behind victorious UC Santa Barbara.
