High School Roundup: Mesa beats Estancia to take third in tourney

SANTA ANA — Costa Mesa beat rival Estancia, 8-6, to earn third place at Santa Ana Valley High Saturday.

James Lewis and Quinn Stone scored two goals each for the Mustangs (18-5).

Costa Mesa lost to Western, 6-5, in the semifinals led by Wyatt Ferris’ three goals.

Estancia (8-13) lost to Yorba Linda, 15-6, in the semifinals.

Derek Andrews had three goals for the Eagles.

GIRLS’ CROSS COUNTRY

Mt. SAC Invitational

WALNUT — Newport Harbor High finished sixth of 17 teams in a Division II girls’ “blue” heat Saturday at Mt. San Antonio College.

Junior Paige Tennison finished third individually on the three-mile course with a time of 18 minutes, 35 seconds. Maggie Goodson was 29th in 19:40, and Leah Van Dyke was 44th in 20:11.

Katelyn Mead (48th, 20:19), Katherine Maddox (51st, 20:25), Ashley Ima (57th, 20:37) and Makena Owen (65th, 20:54) also ran for Harbor.

The Sailors are at Sunset League finals at 9 a.m. Saturday, at Central Park in Huntington Beach.

Mt. SAC Invitational

WALNUT — Costa Mesa High senior Robert Blackwell earned second place in the boys’ Division IV race in 16 minutes, 34 seconds Saturday at Mt. San Antonio College.

Mustangs sophomore Brett Bermudez won the boys’ Division IV sophomore race in 17:21.

Costa Mesa senior Raquel Friedmann finished 49th in Division IV in 22:02.

The Costa Mesa boys finsihed seventh and the girls were 15th.
