Cal Poly Invitational

SAN LUIS OBISPO — UC Irvine placed seven runners in the top 10, including champion Brett Matejka, to claim the team title Saturday morning at Cuesta College.

Matejka finished the 8,000-meter course in 26 minutes, 37.5 seconds, ahead of second-place teammate Colin Hacker (26:38.5).

Andy Burich (fourth in 26:49.4), Victor Bonilla (fifth in 26:52.8), Steven Melena (eighth in 27:07.9), Barrett Tilley (ninth in 27:09.1) and Sam Hyams (10th in 27:11.7) rounded out UCI’s top seven.

The Anteaters’ 16 points were 33 better than runner up Cal Poly San Luis Obispo.

SAN LUIS OBISPO — Freshman Colleen Lillig was fourth to lead UC Irvine to the team title Saturday at Cuesta College.

Lillig completed the 5,000-meter course in 18 minutes, 8.6 seconds.

Also shining for UCI were Katherine Nielsen (sixth in 18:21.8), Maggie Newton-Neal (eighth in 18:38.7), Melissa Mead (10th in 18:44.3), Samia Sailinuu in (11th in 18:48.6), Shelby Pock (12th in 18:49.9) and Carlotta Pham (14th in 19:01.3).

UCI’s 23 points were 14 better than runner-up Cal Poly San Luis Obispo.

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL

Vanguard def. Hope International

COSTA MESA — Lavea KaUwila had six saves to lead the Lions to a 25-21, 25-22, 25-23 Golden State Athletic Conference win Saturday.

Alexandra Leja had 11 assist, while Lisa Morgan led Vanguard (12-9, 4-8 in conference) with six digs.

Hope is 5-11, 2-10.

Cal State Northridge def. UC Irvine

NORTHRIDGE — Juliane Piggott and Larissa Nordyke had 17 and 16 kills, respectively for the Anteaters in the Big West Conference match Saturday.

The Matadors won, 25-19, 18-25, 25-21, 22-25, 16-14.

Kristin Winkler led the Anteaters (5-15, 1-6 in conference) with 23 digs, while Kari Pestolesi had 15 digs. Marissa Alvarez led UCI with 36 assists.

Cal State Northridge improved to 9-13, 2-5.

SAN LUIS OBISPO — Anteaters junior goalkeeper Andrew Fontein recorded four saves in his 10th shutout of the season and 19th of his career in the Big West Conference match Saturday.

Amani Walker had four shots, including two on goal for No. 7-ranked UCI (10-1-2, 3-0-1).

The Anteaters, unbeaten in their last seven games, play at Cal State State Northridge Wednesday at 7 p.m.

Vanguard 1, The Master’s 0

SANTA CLARITA — Kevin Cornwall scored in the third minute for the Lions in the Golden State Athletic Conference match Saturday.

Goalie Trevor Herrera had three saves for Vanguard (6-7, 5-1 in conference), ranked No. 14 in the NAIA.

The Master’s dropped to 6-5-2, 3-4.
