Former UCI volleyball player wins Malibu Open
Whitney Pavlik, a former women’s volleyball player at UC Irvine, partnered up with Jenny Kropp to win the National Volleyball League Malibu Open last Sunday at Zuma Beach.
Pavlik and Kropp, the No. 1-seeded team, defeated 19th-seeded Olaya Pazo and Kendra Van Zwieten, 21-15, 21-16, in the finale.
During the 32-team tournament, Pavlik and Kropp swept each of their six matches.
Next for Pavlik and Kropp is an NVL tournament in Virginia Beach, Va., on Aug. 26-28.

OCTC pancake breakfast 5K at Fairview Park
The Estancia High cross country and track and field programs are teaming up with the Orange County Track Club for the 14th annual OCTC Pancake Breakfast 5K at Fairview Park in Costa Mesa on Sunday at 8 a.m.
The top three finishers in each age, male and female division will earn medals. The event will also feature a 1K fun run for children 12 and under.
The entry fee for the 5K, breakfast and T-shirt is $20, the 1K fun run for kids and breakfast is $10, breakfast only is $5, and the 5K, breakfast and membership is $50.

Costa Mesa City Championship nears
The 39th annual Will Jordan Classic Costa Mesa City Championship is on Aug. 6-7 at Costa Mesa Golf and Country Club.
Jeff Coburn won the two-day tournament on his home course last year. The UC Irvine graduate beat out Newport Beach resident Will Tipton.
The event expects to draw more than 300 golfers.
