Sunset Conference baseball coaches select ‘Dream Team’ to honor players
Sunset Conference baseball coaches have each selected up to five high school players from their respective teams as part of a conference “Dream Team.â€
Though no conference games were played this spring, Edison coach Cameron Chinn said in an email that the teams wanted to appropriately recognize those who displayed excellence in the abbreviated 2020 season. The CIF canceled spring sports championships on April 3 due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Huntington Beach coach Benji Medure selected senior center fielder Jake Vogel, senior outfielder Jag Burden, senior infielder Joe Yost, junior catcher/first baseman Blake Penso and junior left-handed pitcher/outfielder Shane Stafford from the Oilers, the defending Surf League champions. Huntington Beach was 6-3 when the rest of the season was canceled.
Edison (5-4-1) had senior first baseman Luke DeStefano, senior infielder Tyler Weaver, senior pitcher Dominic Laney, senior outfielder Ryan Ruiz and senior pitcher Zach Garber as Dream Team selections.
Fountain Valley coach Deric Yanagisawa selected senior pitcher/infielder Jake Brooks, senior shortstop Sebastian Murillo, senior third baseman/outfielder pitcher Cole Wentz, senior first baseman/pitcher Noah Karliner and senior second baseman Tito Sanchez as Dream Team selections for the Barons (6-2).
In the Wave League, coach Toby Hess of defending champion Marina (5-7) selected senior shortstop Rocco Peppi, junior catcher David Mashburn, junior infielder Lucas Iorgulesecu, junior pitcher Trevor Lanksbury and junior pitcher Chad Lux.
Laguna Beach coach Jeff Sears selected senior second baseman Charlie Pillsbury, senior center fielder Nolan Smith, senior catcher Aidan Booth, senior pitcher/first baseman Aidan Kidd and junior shortstop/pitcher Eric Silva. The Breakers finished 8-1.
Coach Kevin McCaffrey of Corona del Mar (5-4) picked senior shortstop Kieran Sidebotham, junior third baseman Blake Butcher, junior pitcher/designated hitter Keller Strauss, junior catcher/outfielder Nico DiFerdinando and sophomore center fielder Charlie Mannon.
Newport Harbor (4-6-1) had senior pitcher/outfielder Jack Bibb, senior second baseman/pitcher Kyle Binford, senior pitcher Logan Pence, senior first baseman/pitcher Braham Duncan and senior catcher/outfielder Chase Greer make the Dream Team, as selected by coach Evan Chalmers.
Los Alamitos (7-4) had senior outfielder Jared Anderson, senior pitcher Zach Locke, senior outfielder/catcher Evan Leibl and senior outfielder/catcher John Newman as Dream Team honorees. Coach Matthew Nuez made the selections.
