High School Roundup: Newport Harbor thrower Aidan Elbettar sets two personal-best marks
Newport Harbor High senior thrower Aidan Elbettar put himself in exclusive company on Wednesday in a Wave League boysâ track and field dual meet against Marina at home.
Elbettar threw a personal-best mark of 200 feet, eight inches to win the discus throw, eclipsing the 200-foot threshold for the first time. Among high school throwers, that mark trails only Maurice Westmoreland of Klein Forest (Texas), who has thrown 204-6 this season.
Elbettar also achieved a lifetime-best mark of 63-8 in winning the shotput. He became the national leader in the event.
Marinaâs Alejandra Rosales registered a mark of 139-4 in the girlsâ discus throw, which was good for fifth in the state.
The Vikings swept the dual meet. Marina took the boysâ competition 71-59, while also edging out Newport Harbor 63-62 on the girlsâ side.
BOYSâ LACROSSE
Corona del Mar 18, Beckman 7: Ryan Rector scored four goals for the Sea Kings in Wednesdayâs nonleague road match.
Jackson Guizan and Logan Ip each scored three goals for CdM (2-0).
Edison 13, El Toro 0: The Chargers improved to 6-2 overall with Wednesdayâs nonleague win at home.
BOYSâ TENNIS
Corona del Mar 10, Woodbridge 8: Logan Friedman, Max Krykunenko and John Dick each won two singles sets for the Sea Kings in Wednesdayâs nonleague home match.
Scott Thompson and Alex Nikolaev won twice in doubles for CdM (3-2), which plays at Huntington Beach on Thursday at 3 p.m. in a Sunset Conference crossover match.
BOYSâ GOLF
Edison 189, Rolling Hills Estates Peninsula 199: Timothy Jung was the individual medalist for the Chargers with a one-under-par 35 in Wednesdayâs nonleague match at Rolling Hills Country Club.
Edison improved to 3-0.
BOYSâ SWIMMING
Marina 102.5, El Modena 67.5: Kyle Sary won the 50-yard freestyle and 100 freestyle, helping the host Vikings improve to 5-0 after Wednesdayâs nonleague meet.
Stuart Holton won the 100 butterfly for the Vikings, and Cooper Livingston was second in both the 200 freestyle and 100 backstroke.
Huntington Beach 117.5, Laguna Beach 49.5: Chase Dodd won the 200-yard freestyle and 500 free for the visiting Oilers in Wednesdayâs Wave League opener.
Dodd touched in 1 minute 47.58 seconds in the 200 free and 4:57.13 in the 500 free.
GIRLSâ SWIMMING
Laguna Beach 98, Huntington Beach 72: The Breakersâ Jessie Rose won the 100-yard freestyle and was second in the 200 free in Wednesdayâs Wave League opener at home.
Rose touched in 53.40 seconds to win the 100 free, and she finished the 200 free in 1 minute 54.78 seconds. Laguna Beachâs Ava Houlahan won the 200 individual medley (2:24.92) and was second in the butterfly (1:03.92).
Huntington Beachâs Summer West won the 200 free (1:53.38) and 500 free (5:06.48).
BASEBALL
La Quinta 8, Los Amigos 2: The Lobos had a four-game winning streak snapped after Wednesdayâs Garden Grove League game at home.
Los Amigos (4-6, 1-1 in league) hosts Rancho Alamitos on Friday at 3 p.m.
