College Roundup: Orange Coast baseball beats rival Golden West

Cary Arbolida went five for five with three runs batted in and two runs scored, helping the Orange Coast College baseball team beat rival Golden West 8-5 on Thursday in an Orange Empire Conference game at home.

Logan Jackson went three for four with a pair of doubles and two runs scored for Orange Coast (10-7, 1-1 in conference). Oscar Favela and Ryan O’Halloran had two hits apiece.

Vinny Tosti had three hits, including a home run, and two RBIs to lead Golden West (9-10, 1-1). Luke Chung also drove in two runs.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

UC Irvine 86, UC Riverside 76: Haleigh Talbert had 22 points for the Anteaters on Thursday in a Big West Conference game at home.

Sophia Locandro had 18 points for the Anteaters (12-17, 8-7 in conference). Lauren Saiki tallied 13 points and 12 assists.

UC Irvine closes out the regular season with a game at Cal State Fullerton on Saturday at 5 p.m.

Vanguard 85, Menlo 59: Victoria Chea had 21 points, four assists and three steals to lead the third-seeded Lions on Thursday in a first-round game of the Golden State Athletic Conference Tournament in Santa Barbara.

Estefania Giner had 12 points, seven rebounds and two blocked shots for Vanguard (23-5). Vanessa Murphy added 14 points and six rebounds.

Gabriela Rosas had 11 points, four rebounds and four steals, and Michaella Elad chipped in with 10 points and six rebounds.

WOMEN’S TRACK AND FIELD

NAIA Indoor National Championships: Vanguard’s Marissa Thompson finished sixth in the preliminary round of the 5,000 meters on the first day of the meet Thursday in Brookings, S.D.

Thompson ran a personal-best time of 17 minutes 43.92 seconds to advance to Saturday’s event finals.

Vanguard’s Madison Parr finished 13th in her preliminary heat of the same event in 18:10.53 but did not advance.
