Briefs: Local sailors honored
Newport Beach residents Michael Menninger, Charlie Buckingham, Blaire Belling and Marla Menninger have been named All-American by the Intercollegiate Sailing Assn. for the 2009-10 school year.
Michael Menninger, a junior at St. Mary’s College of Maryland, and Buckingham, a junior at Georgetown, were recognized as coed skippers.
Belling, a junior at Yale, and Marla Menninger, a sophomore at Yale, were named as crew.
Michael Menninger helped St. Mary’s win the ICSA/APS Team Racing National Championship, completed June 1 on Lake Mendota in Madison, Wisc. He helped the Seahawks finish fourth at the ICSA/Gill National Championship, completed June 3 at the same venue.
Georgetown was fifth and Yale was sixth at the latter competition.
Chris Barnard, a freshman at Georgetown, received honorable mention among coed skippers.
A panel of representatives from each of the seven ICSA conferences chose the honorees.

Bernatz makes all-conference
Connor Bernatz, a Newport Beach resident, was a unanimous All-West Coast Conference selection in baseball
Bernatz, a junior outfielder at the University of San Francisco, batted a team-best .403 in WCC play with eight doubles, three home runs and 12 runs batted in.
For the year, the 2008 freshman All-American hit .303 with four homers and 25 RBIs.
Bernatz, who played at Mater Dei High, had 16 multi-hit games for the Dons and did not commit an error in 91 chances in right field.
USF finished 28-28 and was fourth in the conference with a 10-11 record.
