Saturday’s shooting victim in stable condition
COSTA MESA — A man who was shot several times while sitting in his SUV at Paularino Elementary School is in stable condition, police said Monday.
Police identified the victim as Wilfren Banejas-Rodriguez, 26. He was shot in his left arm, left shoulder and neck, and the left side of his torso, according to a police news release Monday.
Banejas-Rodriguez was waiting to meet a friend before heading to work when a gunman approached his vehicle and opened fire into the driver’s seat, police said.
Nearby residents reported the incident, which happened about 11 p.m. Saturday, said Costa Mesa Police Sgt. Ed Everett.
No gang activity was suspected, and Banejas-Rodriguez has no gang ties, according to police.
A man who was wearing dark clothes, in his 20s or 30s is being sought in connection with the crime.
“It was a little disquieting,†said Mary Ann O’Connell who lives in the Mesa North area. “Police seemed pretty tense. Usually they’re pretty affable.â€
If anyone has any information, they should call Det. Mike Delgadillo at (714) 754-5197 or Everett at (714) 754-5395.
