City approves downtown valet

Editor’s note: This corrects the headline. The zoning administrator, not the City Council, approved the program.

Downtown patrons will soon have the option of paying to valet their cars during peak times instead of trying to find parking in the congested beach-area.

On Wednesday the zoning administrator approved valet parking programs at the Main Promenade and Plaza Almeria parking structures during the summer, holidays and special events.

The program will help alleviate residents and visitors from parking in downtown neighborhoods during busy times by making the existing structures more efficient, according to the staff report.

A portion of the lower level of each structure will be used and along with four on-street metered parking spaces on Third Street and two metered spaces on Olive Avenue for the drop-off and pick-up zones.

The valet programs will be open 5 to 11 p.m. Monday to Thursday and noon to 11 p.m. Friday to Sunday.

Staff are tentatively looking to open the valet parking programs in the next three months.
